Wine clubs (hic)

Missus had a delivery from Amazon the other day with a voucher for £40 off a case of wine from Virgin wines making a dozen bottles cost 40 squids which I thought wasnt too shabby. Reading the small print it tells me that I get offered a dozen bottles at top nugget price every 3 months but I'm not obliged to buy anything else. I figure they probably email you to say they are sending you these other cases and if you dont say otherwise your going to be paying in the long run for the cheap initial case.
Anyone on here use Virgin wines and taken advantage of the cheap initial case and how easy is it to stop the subsequent deliveries, means I can give the Draino and tonic a rest.
Cheers,
Bob

I've had various freebies (for changing energy supplier) or cheap cases (Groupon/Travelzoo vouchers) from Virgin over the years. Always a one-off though, never had to sign up to any kind of subscription type thing.

I signed up for the times wine thing a few years ago, with the same intention as you, but the wine they have subsequentially sent is excellent, I get to try wine I would never normally buy and I have a nice stock in the cellar to choose from. I can honestly say out of the hundred or so bottles I have had, I've not come across one I don't like. OK its not cheap at 80quid for 12, but not too silly seeing that the cheap plonk at the local spa is 5.99+ and mostly shite.

Yeah - I did that Virgin one once and from what i remember it was all a bit of a scam, took a while to get it all stopped. Better to join one of the reputable wine clubs - probably like the Times one from the chap above.

We did the Sunday Time wine thing, and then Laithwaites one (actually both run out of the same warehouse in Theale). The good thing is that they send you nice wine. If you don't like a bottle then you can get your money back on it. We had good experiences with the people when we phoned in.

Generally a good deal, but it means there is always a bottle in the house (good and bad).

i did laithwaites for a while, and i never got a bad one. You can easily cancel if you want. In fact, i started because i got an offer addressed to the previous occupier, and i rang up and said id have it instead! Look on their website and see what is on offer.

In supermarkets, i find the £5 bottles usually passable but occationally vile, and it is nice to be sent a selection of decent ones.

I did the virgin offer, I did cancel it as I didn't particularly like a few of the wines (maybe I'm a snob?) - absolutely no problems cancelling it, and theye even offered to refund for the "bad" bottles - didn't do this as I *did* drink them all and they weren't awful, just not something I wanted to keep getting.

I will be trying Laithwaites through British Airways. Again, even if it's just for the first case, it's good value. And if the wines turn out to be nice, it doesn't work out to be that expensive either.
