Not getting coverage in the south but Craig Whyte & Rangers fiasco.

it is not getting much coverage south of the border but the Craig Whyte asset strip job on Rangers is right up in the Fred Goodwin league.
Like me I suspect most of us in the forum have little interest in football but even my wife is following the story.

was reported on sky this week that if the club didnt go into administration in the middle of last week they would not have been able to afford the weekends match to go ahead and that is scary. how can they get in such a pickle. although most of the debt was there before craig white took control!

But on a more sensible note... I'm getting sick fed-up with this notion that the fate of Scottish football is somehow inextricably linked to the presence of Rangers. Utter nutsack IMHO!

Let's look at the facts...

The rich businessman Sir David Murray bought Rangers in 1988 and pledged that "for every £5 Celtic spend, Rangers will spend £10". Megalomania, or just sheer vanity? The club then went on a spending rampage to rival any of the big hitters south of the border. They went from being in the doldrums to winning 15 titles and 26 cups under his stewardship - they even competed at the highest levels of European competition.

We now know that the club had funded this success with money they did not have. We also now know that there's a real possibility they were diddling the public purse to the tunes of tens-of-millions as they went about it.

You and I know this process as cheating!

In the years immediately preceding Rangers boom-time, Scottish football was on a high. Attendances were healthy and teams like Aberdeen and Dundee Utd were winning domestic league and cup competitions. Hell, Aberdeen even won the European Cup Winners Cup and Supercup in the 80's, and Utd were getting to Euro finals! As a result, our national team was genuinely competitive and Scottish players were playing for some of the best teams in the world.

Let's fast-forward back to the Murray-years... Rangers started to swat all domestic opponents aside with their big money foreign signings and the attendances started to drop as fans of other clubs were getting tired of seeing who would become 'best-of-the-rest'. Teams like Aberdeen and Dundee Utd were no longer competing in the manner they used to. Our national team was dying due to the lack of investment in home-bred players.

Does that sound like Scottish football was benefitting from Rangers presence to you?

And what does Sir David Murray do when those (financial) chickens come home to roost... he bails out at the first opportunity and hawks the club to the dodgiest bloke on the planet who further bleeds the Scottish game dry!

Rangers now owe huge amounts to small clubs like Dunfermline and Inverness CT... amounts that are unlikely to be settled. These clubs cannot afford to be gazumped like this (and particularly not by a club who are allegedly benefiting them just by existing!

... and breathe!

All the clubs started to get into trouble when the TV deal got into trouble. The amazing thing is how this guy with 27+ companies that have went bust under his control borrow 24 million by signing over 3 years future tickets sales of a club he didn't own, only then using some of the 24 million buy the club and pay one of its creditors only transfer the assets of the club to his name then walk away with the fixed assets of the club plus several millions claiming the club owes him 23 million ?

Not really think MacLaren without Ferrari, Holmes without Moriarty, Superman without Lex Luthor.

When the Her Majesty's armed forces were chucking the argies out of the Falklands hardened IRA men took great satisfaction when said bean eaters got their arse branded. Why ? because that is who the measured themselves against.

What on earth does the IRA and the Falklands war have to do with the financial mismanagement of Rangers FC? And who, or what, are the 'bean eaters'?

Nice to see the Celtic Supporters Club rallying round to help out their friendly rivals . They've set up two online shops for them - www.buymyflute.com and www.sellmysash.com.

I really don't understand sport, but the business of sport is even more confusing. I really don't get how you can have a team that as far as I can tell has been at the top tier of a league for ever can suddenly be broke and go into administration.

I feel abit sad as even though I don't care about football or even like the game or consider it sport, I lived in Glasgow and it was pretty much mandatory to follow football so Rangers were sort of my team (Which saved me from a beating once, so I owe them that, well Rangers Fans but it's the same difference.)

I think it would be bad news for Celtic even if we ignor the finacial side of things as loosing your rival is a hard thing to bare.

I'm sorry to say but I really could not give a toss.

They are all a bunch of overpaid half wits In fact they degrade every hard working person in this country by their obscene pay packets and compltee lack of respect or responsability. Good grief they are the role models for hundreds of youngsters who have not yet learned to discriminate.

Just imagine if your daughter came home with one!

Good riddance to the lot of them I hope it's contagious and all the self important pundits have to get a real job and actually contribute to this country instead of sponging.

Sorry to sit on the fence like this but my HR training makes me adopt a non confrontational attitude

Cheers!

The person most to blame is Mel Brookes. Why ? Craig Whyte saw "The Producers" and thought it was a business studies self-help guide ;-0

come and join the Rangers party! "
