Beer/Whiskey/etc tour of England/Scotland tips??
Hey guys,
Starting to look into next years vacation which may be a beer/whiskey tour of the UK. Looking for places to go, and ways to do it for less $$$$.
All I need is a clean place to sleep for lodging. The only mandatory stop for me so far is the Isle of Skye to visit the ancestral home. Other than
that I would like to see a war museum or two.
Any input is appretiated as I have never been to Europe.
Cheers.
Cory.

England on the cheap....hmmmm, not sure about that these days
But i can recommend a brewery visit and a war museum
Batemans brewery is a rare sight these days, a true family owned brewery that still brews some of thier
beers in the old fashioned way with the original old style equipment
Beers of the world Here you will find a list of many independents
in England, Scotland and Wales.
And for a war museum you cant beat the imperial war museum in Duxford near Cambridge. They just finished spending HUGE ammounts of money creating a
great museum with a massive new hanger, truly stunning if thats your thing
IWM Duxford
Hope this gives you some ideas!

a day in york and a trip to the railway museum is well worth the effort. Whilst in the area, you may as well see the moors/dales. All good stuff.

Actually there's 2 - Black sheep and Theakstons.
Well worth a visit, you can stay in the Kings head and enjoy the scenery too!

I didn't know if both were still going! Didn't Black Sheep (previously Theakstons I think) buy Theakstons back?

to drive and if your cheeky enough ask to have a taste of the real clear whisky before its bottled you can run your car on it......
Do the trail then continue up to the land of midgies, Skye..........
I'm off to Mull for the rally next week, will prob drop into the distillery in Tob as usual!!!!
Very naughty though, thought it was very much a nono to let anybody have any of the clear stuff straight off the still!!!
Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion
retro car restoration and tuning

IMHO you must do Islay!!
It's a pricey ferry but seven distillaries on one tiny island?! I would be rude not to.....

IIRC you can drink the stuff off the still but you can't take it with you as it hasn't been through the tax mans books. You need to go for
a wee before you leave.

And if you want a war museum, go to Eden Camp (an old PoW camp) and the air museum at Elvington as well while you're in York, and also do a bit
of a drive out around Scarborough and Whitby - best fish and chips the world has to offer!

If you are in the Yorkarea, Eden Camp at Malton is a very interesting war museum, a little different to the norm.

Ah well long story but one of the theakston brothers fell out with the family and started his own brewery and called it Black Sheep (something to with
him being the black sheep of the family!)
Theakstons then sold out to Scottish and newcastle or Matthew Browns or something or Matthew browns sold to S&N or the other way around - who
cares? anyway not long ago the theakston family bought it back and are continuing the good work.
Theakstons bitter in my own humble opinion is possibly one of the finest ales you can buy. Black sheep is also excellent.
Theakstons also make a Black Bull bitter which is a particular favourite of mine but not widely available.
The theakstons bitter has undergone a significant improvement since the family bought the brewery back.
Here endeth todays lesson
all this typing has made me thirsty, I think I'll go to the pub

If you're down South in Hampshire, then my old local in Cheriton, the Flower Pots does a beer festival around the end of August, showcasing
their own beers and other local independant brewers beers. The best is a drop of Pots Chilli Beer, there's usually some live music and
there's free camping too. If you make it there I'll buy you a pint and chew the cud.
May even have the damned car on the road by then too

Imperial war museum at Duxford is well worth a visit . Just down the road a couple of miles from me. Having a flying display this weekend if the
weather is OK . Probably worth timing your visit to see an air show if you like planes . Might be worth checking out a Youth Hostel for cheap
accomadation? think there is still one in Cambridge and there is normally a shuttle bus to Duxford . Cambridge is a busy tourist city in the summer
with loads of old colleges and the punting is very popular . As for beer there are some nice pubs around town .
