VW Passat headlight adjustment??

Happy New Year to All.
We have a 51 Passat estate which I rarely drive but on last couple of uses in dark I have been very disappointed with headlight dip beam range.
Lights are normal halogen(not gas)and i can see two plastic allen screws which turn small plastic wheel on back of light but appear to be doing little.
I am trying to find out if one screw does height and one horiz adjust and if so which does what or does one adjust main beam and one dip??Alternatively has anyone experience of these adjusters breaking or seizing and a fix.
Regards,Mike

Get your local MOT test station or garage to do it for you! Although it is possible to do it against a wall (no I'm not a pervert ) Chances are you will get it wrong and we have all seen badly adjusted headlight before. Try looking for a load adjuster near the light switch, it may have numbers on it, adjust to zero you may find that helps

Pretty sure my old Passat ('51) plate had a rotary dial in the dash that could be used to raise or lower the lights according to the weight in the boot. Seem to remember it was numbered 1-3 and located on the door side of the dash, low down?

Might be worth a look?

Also worth noting that bulb replacement on a '51 plate Passat is a main dealer only job!! Found out to my cost when I lost a brake light bulb in London one day. Need a special tool to get the covers off in the boot.

And found out the front headlamp bulbs require bits of trim removing to replace them. The passenger side isn't so bad, but the drivers side you've got to remove loads of stuff.

HTH

Mike

nope-have made sure load adjuster on dash is set correctly.
concern is if adjuster screws on lights are not working it will not be a case of paying to have lights checked but could result in ligts or fittings being changed!!thats why was trying to find out what each screw should do.
You are right about side and h/lights-haynes recommend taking off front bumper etc to change h/light bulb.
I made special tool to change side light bulbs as couldnt reach far enough back by hand-even had the Mrs try with long skinny fingers!

Here goes-inner screw height, outer for horiz adj.
height adjuster screw has parted from wheel leaving lens untensioned and pointing at the ground-
will have to remove bumper and h/light to see whether this can all go back together.
