2 plumbing questions

1) Can I fit service valves in my 15mm heating pipes or are they too restrictive?

2) When assembling compression fittings should I use boss white or something on the threads?

Number 2.

I use PTFE tape round the thread and olive.

AS for number 1 i dont see why not. They cant have any more restriction than radiator valves can they?

But i am no plumber.

Use Boss white if it makes you feel more secure!

In my previous life as a plumber I never used Boss white on them and I can't think of any occasion when a compression fitting (that I had tightened) failed. It can also make them more difficult to undo in the future.

You can get full bore valves with handles on, saves looking for a screwdriver when there's water pi55ing everywhere.

I was glad of these recently when the power shower I'd fitted went cold recently, so I switched the shower off, but I could still hear the pump running, it took an ono second to realise that the water that was comming out of the pump was not comming into the bathroom anymore, thankfully the pump is located close by and with a deft turn of two handles the 2 bar deluge that was being pumped into the airing cupboard stopped

Moral: When fitting stuff and you're supplied with four new hoses, fit four new hoses, dont be lazy and use two of the old ones, they'd become brittle and teh vibration of the pump just clean sheared them.

some people balance the flow to each radiator via the valves, if you have done this then it might change the balance if you fit iso valves. Not a big deal IMHO, i never balanced mine, just have them all on full!

My mate always uses PTFE, totally unnecessary in my books, never needed it myself. Ive done fittings so loose in the past that i could reuse the olive if i undid it, and they never leaked.

ptfe stops the olive doing what it should and just prolongs the inevitable LEAKS
and yes full bore valves are available but rad valves and lockshields do the same job ??

Confused but excited.

PTFE on compression fitting threads also reduces friction in the nut, leading to over tightening on the olive = leaks.

Tell them about the bent treacle edges!
