OT DIY - sealing flakey paintwork

Want to do some painting in the bathroom (got the right kitchen/bathroom paint) but need to seal the old flakey paintwork as I know when I start rolering over it it'll come off in pieces and look rubbish. The plasterwork it's on is very good and level so don't want to rub it down or use polyfill smooth over. Is there any alternative out there?

Only idea I came up with was to brush pva over it but not convinced it's a great idea.

Anyone got any better suggestions?

cheers,

Ned.

Actually the pva is perfectly acceptable, slightly watered down it will work well. A quick sand before hand just to remove the very loose stuff then just brush it on with a wall papering brush. Think yourself lucky I have 6 rooms still left to do

I once had the same problem. When I tried to seal it it encouraged it to lift as does the emulsion. i was fortunate in a way, that the paint chipped away easily. I used a 5"" cabinet scraper and fetched it off that way. It sounds hard work but if the adhesion to the wall is that poor it will come off easily as you drag the blade over. Then seal it with pva. I too have spent easter decorating.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PVA it. Thats what the plasterers & builders do. You can get big tubs at a builders merchants. Water it down a bit to help it penetrate.
