Diesel tin top recommendations

Getting seriously fed up of fixing my Mondeo every lunch break so going to trade it in instead of selling privately. This means I am now looking to get a new car asap.

My budget is up to £7k, been looking at golfs or audi a3 TDIs.

Want something with a half decent interior as I do a fair few miles in it. Was looking at the VW/Audi 130 engine as I wouldnt mind a bit of poke, but to be honest anything around 100/110 will do.

Any recommendations apart from VW/Audis, just want to keep my options open.

The new Vectra diesel is nice. As is the new shape Mondeo. I would definately look at the new Passat. You should be able to find something at that price. Much better interior than the others mentioned. How about a Skoda Octavia?

Sorry should have said, looking to scale down a bit as the mondeo is a bit excessive for my needs, looking for more golf/a3/focus size.

Mine is the one that was phased out in 2000. Have thought about it, but looking to go a bit smaller really. Just don't need a car that big.

I would certainly recommend the Focus, I've got the 1.6 90bhp Diesel and it's pretty nippy, and return good mph (like you I do a fairly high mileage). For the money you've got you should be able to pick up the new style one. got mine at 6 months old for circa £8.5

Grande Punto with the variable gemotery turbo..good economy, good acceleration, cheap tax, cheap insurance and the grande is about focus size.

Fiat ;-()
Ever year I holiday in Italy I notice that the Italian buy less and less Fiats -- in fact they are quite a rare sight among the Audi and VW.

Said it before but I'll say it again, a bora is a cheaper (booted) golf, all service/repair parts interchangable. I'd go for a pd series over the older 90/110 vw tdi's. I've got a remapped 115 which feels quicker than an a4 130 I test drove.
fabia/ibiza will be quicker and more efficient as smaller/lighter, leons are quite sporty, golf and a3 are expensive imho. octavia is a hatchback which makes it very practical.

Ned.

I'm with Ned.

I had a 130 Bora Sport for three years. Totally reliable, comfortable, reasonably quick (especially with mag blue light on the roof) and it towed really well too!

Slightly cheaper than the golf and a biggish boot.

Regards

Wyn

Fabia vrs is a nice car but the ibiza 130 sport is cheaper, if you want quicker still they do a 150 ibiza cupra!

Ned.

Another vote for the Alfa here - don't dismiss the 156 either - actually lighter than the 147! and (arguably) better looking

As Ned mentioned, the Leons are worth a look. You could just about pick up an 03/04 130bhp PD TDi SE for £7k, or even a high mileage 150PD Cupra. They're the same mechanicals as the Golf etc but having owned both the Leon does handle better and is equally if not slightly better specced than an equivalent Golf.
