MG ZT V6 Head Gasket
Does anyone know if the V6 Engine used in the MG ZT has head gasket problems like the 1.8 K series?,
have heard mixed reports!

Later 800s yes but not as far as I know in 75/ZT form.

Really almost completely different engine from the KV6 used in the later 800s the revised KV6 as fitted in the ZT has very few problems -- biggest
one which only applies to the 2.5 is failure of the variable inlet manifold actuating motors, the symptom is a major flat spot during acceleration.
The 2.0 doesn't have this feature/problem but is a bit short on BHP little better than the 1.8 or CDTi performance wise.
Thermostats occasionally give problems as do minor water leaks as do hose clips. On all 75s the dash temperature gauge should not be trusted --- I
have never seen a 75 guage read over 1/2" up the scale.
Check the cooling fans for correct operation --- should run ALMOST continuosly on low speed with AC switched on. Allow the engine to idle for a while
and eventually the fan should change to high speed or switch in a second fan (depends on engine).
Check you get both sets of keys and they work the EWS security system on these cars is almost exclusively main dealer only.
Air bag warning lights showing on the dash is a common niggle caused by bad connections under the seat --- very easy to fix but returns
Be aware the cam belt interval is 96kmiles and changing the belts is not a cheap job at main dealer prices.
Only the OEM Xpart or Champion spark plugs should be fitted -- plug change interval is 60,000 miles but recommend changing at 30,000 or less with gaps
set at 0.8 mm to avoid excessive HT voltages damaging the coil packs.
With automatics (JATCO 5 speed) be aware that fluid changes (using only Xpart OEM fluid) are essential for long term reliability --- this require
measuring the temperature of the transmission to ensure correct filling level.
Because of the harder lower suspension the ZT feels a lot more sporting than the 75 but when pressed they both have the same eager but composed road
holding. Brakers are excellent -- most owner report pad life of 60,00 miles.
Tyre wear is more of a problem particularly on the bigger wheel diameters. Tracking should be checked with the vehicle laden.
Finally I don't how often I have to say this the the 1.8 in the 75/zT dosen't have head gasket problems, it had slow water leak problems
that if neglected cause loss of water circulation. The 1.8 in the Freelander is more problematic due to the installation.

The installation of the petrol engines on the Freelander wasn't well thought out --- they are much more prone to airlocking. Also corners were
cut to drive down costs and the Land-Rover plants labour force were not renown for caring much about quality. Ford didn't adopt fairly minor
modifications to the installation sugested by MG-Rover/Power Train on cost grounds.
Lift the bonnet on Freelander and it isn't much different to a Rover 214 all of the auxiliary minor parts are old BL Austin-Rover style, under
the bonnet on the ZT/75 almost everything is from BMW suppliers.

The garage my friend bought his V6 ZT from took it back and gave him a refund, it was so unreliable. It would refuse to start for no apparent reason
then fire up 3 hours later without being touched in between. It didn't overheat though

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

You're not kidding - when I took the wheel of my dad's 75 to do the brakes - all the wheel nut covers were branded "BMW"
