Arrrgghhhhhhh!

Got a phone call from my wife this afternoon. She'd parked the car outside the bairns school and gone in to collect him. Came out 10 minutes later to find the window smashed, drivers door lock bust, glass everywhere.

Luckily she had her purse, keys and mobile phone with her, but they got her handbag and all her make up, along with the radio!

I go straight over there, to see if there is anything I can do. First things first, she phones the police (at 3.30pm). Right says the police, keep the car exactly as it is now, we'll be round at 8.30pm tonight I go off the deep end. So I clear what is left of the glass out of the door, give the interior a once over and she drives the car home, I take the bairn in my car. We get home, she phones the insurance company. Hmm says them, we might right it off.

What! I go off the deep end again! For a lock set, a radio and a window!

(I should explain that we have owned this car for since it was a year old, it's in great condition (apart from the exhaust pipe and the alternator / battery) and I had envisaged keeping it forever).

Insurance company (Budget) say we are just middle men, you need to speak to the guys you are actually insured with. We make them understand that the car is not secure tonight and we need the window replacing ASAP. So we agree with them to get Autoglass out.

The guy turns up about an hour later, and starts work on replacing the window. He's great, brilliant service, hoovers up all the glass, replaces the window, leaves it looking like new. Had to pay £50 excess though!

Then at 8.30pm the copper arrives. Takes some details, of where, when, what was taken etc. Then says basically as there is no CCTV there and SOCO won't come out there is nothing more he can do. Gives us a crime number and leaves.

So that's the state of British policing, if it's not on CCTV there's nothing they can do. Arse.

So, we are left with a car that we can only lock and unlock from the passenger side, a massive insurance excess, higher premiums next year and a little lad who doesn't think school is safe anymore.

Meanwhile the tw@ts that did it got clean away with a M&S handbag, some makeup, some sunbed tokens and a radio that only fits a series 1 pug.

Yours stressed.

Mike

P.S. (SWIMBO has just totted up the cost of replacing the make up in the handbag. It's over £100!)

Hard luck mate.

I had 800 liters of diesel stolen and a 2K pressure washer this week.

Plod came up and advised us against a knee jerk reaction on getting CCTV installed as you need a certain sized resolution clear picture of the face in full frontal in order to gain a conviction.

that sort of set up will be cripplingly costly for a small business.

We are thinking about going down the onsite guard dog route though in an attempt to deterr then thieveing gypsy scum.

Thats a bit unfair isn't it. I'm sure there are lots of plod who aren't too happy about the current state of policing, but they still have to do their jobs as they are instructed.

Ahh sorry to hear that dude,

Ive had several cars broken into in Newcastle and I am always literally AMAZED first at the f***ing cheek of the scum bags that do these things and also how fast and brazen they are.

I literally went into a friends house in Gosforth a few years ago in my xr3i cabriolet (mmmm) and was in about 5 mins (leaving the front of my stereo on - literally just nipping in) had a cup of tea, went out side - hood utterly trashed and stuffing out all over the road and no-one to be seen. Coppers did nothing, crime number out over the phone thats it.

In my experience of police responding to vehicle related crime they just are not bothered at all however when parallel parking my fiesta as a student in Fenham, two uniformed coppers got out and frogmarched me into my own house to ask for all my details since my tail light wasnt working!

After 30 mins inside the house checking my docs (whilst there must have been all sorts going on outside where we lived!) they give me a 7 day wonder and vehicle defect form which I had to get countersigned by an MOT garage!

That same car was later broken into and the dash destroyed to get the stereo out - police did the same as you Mike - crime number out over the phone, no SOCOs or anything.

Well worth what we pay into the coffers as motorists isnt it?

Just given you a call to see if theres owt we can do to help - hope you get it sorted buddy

Geoff

Local plod here have (or used to have) a "clinic" once or twice a week where you could take your car after a theft and they would try and print it.

Did that with my beemer but no dice with fingerprints. Apparently has to be a reasonably humid day (read sweaty fingers) at the time of the theft for the standard process to be able to pick up prints....

What pug is it - I have a standard pug radio & dash plate here (from when I put a better radio in - I didn't just find it in newcastle honest.....;^). Yours for the cost of postage or nowt if you get someone to pick it up.
BTW there's a 6 CD autochanger that goes with it too.....
Actually I expect postage on that lot would be more than the cost of a new ipod & Mp3 USB enabled radio - 30 notes gets some seriously impressive ICE these days

You're lucky they came out. When our Clio was stolen they didn't even bother, they gave me a number for the insurance over the phone.

P.S. If you get a dog they'll just throw it a pork pie laced with sleeping pills and come back when it's asleep or dead.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Police these days are a bunch of f**king a*******s who are only interested in chasing innocent motorists as they know they are the only ones who will pay up. Guess who is going to court for the 6th time next Friday for a so called "driving with no insurance" case - despite having insured the car 4 hrs before I was stopped!!!

Previously I have had 2 letters of thanks for helping out at RTA's (i'm a first aider) and have been lined up as an expert witness in a high profile murder trial (twice on Crimewatch UK) with my evidence / statement resulting in a guilty plea.

Never again will i help those bloody nazi's in uniform!!! Bunch of f**king t*****s.

sorry to hear your woes Mike!

I had a car stolen in Manchester when I was a student there. Police gave a crime no. over the phone and tried to intimate it was my fault the car was stolen for not being a local

When they found it smashed up in Abergele, North Wales the local plod there phoned and left an answer phone message telling me to come and get it. When I phoned back they said bring a coat (it was January) as there's no side windows left and bring a screwdriver to start it

At 21 with the insurance excess and likely premium increase I just scrapped the car myself

On a brighter note - I have a spare Sony radio/cassette head unit with removable front panel if it's any use to you. I can get it shipped up FOC via work to you as well!

Cheers
Nick

99% of the trouble isn't with the BiB that you'll ever meet, it's those further up the chain and the politicians they dine with, that get to make these decisions from behind their comfy desks knowing they'll never have to come face to face with anyone that disapproves.

Anything target driven will fail always miserably as all corners are cut to ensure the figures are stacked up by the easiest means possible.

So us normally law abiding motorists get to stack up their brownie points with easy kills while the real criminals get to wonder free.

I sympathise with the OP, but it's endemic to the current gov't.

Hope you're getting straightened out after the break it, it is f***ing anoying, and its easy to blame the police, but lets look at what is competing for public money:

Provide housing for immigrants, and folk who never have any intention of working.

Provide an income for those above.

Fighting terrorism from those we've invited in..

Provide legal aid, probably for those above, to defend them if they get caught breaking into your car, house or whatever. Think about who represents suspected terrorists and where that money goes...

Drug re-habilitation and treatment programs - to achieve a 3% success rate.

Keeping money back for compensation in today's litigation society.

Studies into why the pensions system is set to fail - cos there's more non working than working.

I could go on but the root cause is the nanny welcoming state we've allowed to be implemented by the minority who stand up and lobby to get what THEY think is right, done.

Sorry to hear that Mike. Hope you get it sorted.

I had a car broken into at Woodall services once. Luckily no windows smashed. Buggers took about £1000 worth of IPAQ, coats, camera etc. Insurance didnt cover it. I ended up fixing lock myself to avoid insurance issues at renewal. Not a nice experience but leson learnt. Inow either take gear wth me when i go in services or make sure it is out of view before i set off. The scum watch out for people putting paltops in boot etc - not nice.

Sorry to hear about your plight but why not try & turn into a little earner.

We had a similar thing happen to us a while ago where the insurance wanted to write the car off for something that wasn't too hard to fix myself. So I let them write it off and pay me out £800 BUT I cut adeal so I could keep the car as salvage. Then I went to a scrappy and got the bits to fix it for £50. another £15 for paint and it was just like new ( well just like old actually ) Hey Presto £700 odd pounds better off.

I've done that with two bikes in the past. Works well - just say you are "Inslted by their derisory offer, but you will except it if they wave their salavage retention charge"

At least if you were planning on keeping the car for ages you still can - better the devil you know and all that!

Oh - should have added the cop then lied in court to back up his nonsense statement written 4 1/2 weeks after the even - told the magistrates that I admitted to having no insurance despite having told him 4 times that day that i'd insured the car before going for my MOT.

Maybe a bit unfair to label all traffic police the same but this one cop could well end up costing me a new job and approx £60k in lost earnings over the next 4 years.

Oh - seen my auntie's ex down half a bottle of whisky and then drive home with 3 kids in the car. He also had 130mph showing on the clock in my old Renault 5 GT turbo - he's a serving traffic cop too.
