Insurance Question

I have just been reading my insurance small print to check the agreed valuation and found the following paragraph

"The insurance does not cover damage to the Insured Vehicle from any cause, nor theft or attempted theft of the vehicle unless it is kept in a properly contructed garage when at home or the garaging address between the hours of 10:00pm and 6am"

That reads to me to say i can only use my car between 6.01am and 9.59pm. Is this normal, has only one else got that restriction? The insurance is SureTerm, underwritten by Highway. This could be a real stinger in the summer if i want to drive back from shows or set off early.

I think it means that you cannot claim for theft if the car is say in a pub car park at 11pm.

It doesn't mean that you cannot drive it.

the way that sounds to me makes it sound like they wont pay out if your car is nicked/vandalised in the night whilst your not using it

would be a complete pain if it does mean your not covered after 10pm

Insurance

It certainly looks as if you only have third party cover during the night.
If on the road that is.

When I was looking for cover for my 19 year old this clause was quite common in a lot of quotes.

First time I have heard of it being applied to a kit car.

I personally, would ring the insurer to clarify your policy and make any amenments needed.

I read it to say that basically the vehicle should be kept in the garage between the hours of 10:00pm and 6am.

If you are elsewhere, ie, other than at home, you will be covered for damage from any cause, theft or attempted theft.

So you can leave it in a pub carpark after 10:00pm (Unless of course, the pub is your home or garaging address, in which case it must be in the garage)

I read it as you've ticked the kept in a garage box. So if it's on your driveway or on the street outside your house you aren't covered.

But you'd need to ring your insurer to see if they interpret that as meaning it can't be parked outside a mate's house you're visiting at midnight.

Now that i have read it back to my self a couple of times, i think Phil is correct. However, i will be making a phone call in the morning to double check.

Thanks - Ash

That sounds very similar to a clause in my friends motorbike insurance. On his the clause as that if he was within 1 or 2 miles from home (cannot remember which) the bike had to be in his garage to be covered, so he couldn't just pop to the shops on it or leave it parked on the roadside BUT he was covered whilst sat on it...

Don't know if that helps

that says to me that IF you're at home between those times, the car has to be in the garage. if you're away somewhere like a friends house in the next town, then you can park in the street and its ocvered.

as said before motorbike insurance is often the same

read it slowly and if you are at home and don't bother to garage it after 10pm...etc.. if your out and about it does not change your insurance... its to stop you saying "of course it's in the garage" to get cheaper insurance then saying "only leave it outside occasionally" when you make a claim...

It does say "when at home" the vehicle will not be covered between the stipulated times.
So if you return from a trundle at 11.00pm and leave the car outside whilst you go to unlock the garage, and your car gets squashed by a crazed fat man on a horse, you'll not be covered.

Now Owelly, we've warned you before about getting home from the pub.

Please take a taxi, it's safer for everyone!
