Mark Evans sucks!

Brake fluid, that is...

In a recent 'A Bike Is Born' episode he was using a brake bleeding tool that looked very useful. Instead of pushing the brake fluid through from the master cylinder, it was sucking it from the nipple (Ooer, missus!).

It looked very useful for a one-man operation, and I was wondering who made them, and how much they cost. It was a real PITA when I bled my brakes!

David

P.S. Hands up everyone who thinks that the 'Bike is Born' trike is remarkably ugly...

That's the beast. Too expensive for my taste - I'll stick with my 1-way valve on a bit of plastic tube!

I watched the program and it looked like it didn't work to me. They had a helluva job.

I bought the easi-bleed system when I built the last car and it worked a treat. Bled the brakes in no time at all. Dead simple. Brilliant to use.

GET ONE you won't regret it.

I've used the easy bleed pressure system and it works a treat.
You are right, they ended up bleeding the brakes the old fashioned way, he mentioned it but it didn't show it

Bike brakes are a pig to bleed anyway because of the short piston stroke. I had to take my caliper off the bracket and lift it higher than the master cylinder to get it to bleed. I still use the one way rubber tube with the end in a jam jar of fluid just in case. I'e used the Gunson easi-bleed run off a spare tyre but you don't need much pressure for it.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

my car now has real brakes! since last saturday!

took just over an hour to bleed. used the one way valve on a bit of tube into an old jar thingy.

my brakes are abs, and the only probs I had were

a. the back brakes dont bleed conventionally - you must turn on the ignition and let the abs pump do the work. just put yer foot on the pedal and the system does the rears for you.

b. that connection I didnt tighten up on the abs block in 2001. pi$$ed about 1/2 litre of fluid on the garage floor before I realised that nowt was getting to the back brakes. Had about extra 1/2 hr of work to get to it. hardest joint on the whole system to get at.

moral of story?

tighten things before you forget.

cheapo flaring kits work FINE

as do cheapo bleed kits

Im waiting for the Mark Evans series were he actually shows you something usefull. All he generally does is put bits together that someone else has made (at a very high price) or gets someone else to do the bits that may be a shade difficult.
As for the Gunson easy bleed, brilliant bit of kit wouldnt be without one.
Cheers

ooh, splitrivet!

I caught a bit on him doing up a triumph/old bike of some sort, as well as the westy, a plane, anf the cobra.

He does have the perfect scenario for building hasn't he? Endless pots of cash, every tool known to man and a big workshop. Plus 4 guys behind the camera to help get it all done!!

But i think i am picking up tips all the time!

But then i am not a mechanic, and perhaps it is aimed at the amateur (or indeed very amateur!)

ah yes... that westy he made..... would of failed the SVA in a flash Something tells me someone got bribed lol

Halfords using to do a one-man bleeding kit. Uses air pressure from the spare tyre, sucks fluid through. That worked well !!! Might be worth looking into ?

I once made a pressure bleeding unit on the principle of the easibleed. All that is needed is a spare master cylinder cap, a tyre conector from a foot pump and a bit of hose. fit a hose connector to the cap and join it to the tyre connector. Fill the master cylinder with fluid and then fit the cap and hose, connect to tyre with about 20psi of air and undo each bleed nipple to bleed brakes , keeping an eye on the fluid level.
If bleeding a full system it is better to fit a plastic or metal container between tyre and mastercylinder with a dip tube to act as a resevoir to avoid having to dismantle each time to top up the fluid.

Okay so Mark Evans is a bit of a plonker at times but give him a break, his programmes are a darn site more entertaining than most of what's on discovery home and leisure!!

Personally I have enjoyed all his programmes except for the bike ones but then I don't like bikes all that much. Yes it's hardly rocket science but I'm sure that we've all learned something useful along the road if we're honest...

Cheers,
Craig.

Some of His TV efforts have been worthwhile, Its pretty obvious that he is not everyones cup of tee
But he does show "us"
that all of these mechanical wonders from bikes, trikes, cobra, e-type, aircraft and helicopter, how easy it is to strip, rebuild/repair and replace in very easy to watch steps

He has even made stripping an engine and rebuilding it look quite easy

Yes he has a workshop that is larger than all of my house, he has his tools valeted once a week and you could eat you dinner off the floor (yuk)
but he has to, he could not produce the program with the work and entertainment from my garage,

I quite enjoy his humour and the programmes, I would prefer more detail
but prehaps that would lose viewers

must be honest..i like watching his programmes....better than soap nonsense for sure.....
it's well frustrating though...(or is it envious)- to see endless money thrown at the projects and the ideal world workshop - single leaky garage is well awkward to work on a kit in...........

His shows are definitely more interesting than the typical "auto" programme we get fed here in the US. Too bad they are all so shallow and devoid of truely useful information...

I have been wanting to create a tv show that chronicles the life of a "car nut" trying to build a car from scratch in a two car garage with virtually no money and one side of the garage occupied by a mini-van.

I think it would sell....
