Pug 306 dirty D

hey there

Have been getting some trouble with my tintop for a while now. Seems quite reluctant to start. Sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders until you boot the gas - then it runs fine.

I don't know much about Dirty diesels. Could it be a glow plug?? 1.9 XUD (turbo D) engine.

Thanks again for any help you can give

Rupert

Glow plugs just warm the air before starting. When the engine is running, the glow plugs arnt used. Could be an injector.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Does it continue running fine after the first time you hit the gas?

If so, it is most probably the glowplug. You can check this by measuring the electrical resistance over the individual plugs. If 1 out of 4 is different, replace it. They should not be that expensive.

I trust the pre heat light comes on and goes out like it should?

If so then i would try putting the pre heat on 2 or 3 times before starting it and see if that makes a difference.

If that makes no difference i would have a quick visual check of the pre heat wiring and components - test them if you can and know how.

Also worth a check if you can, is to see if the fuel line in the engine bay has air bubbles in it or not - i had one that was sucking air in and was a bitch to start and was lumpy as hell until it sucked it through and ran on 100% diesel. (mine had a clear fuel pipe in it for some reason)

If the repeated preheat does the trick then i would go for the glow plugs, only a few quid each to replace and it aint worth changing one or 2 just do the lot and be done with it.

If none of the above sorts it out then it may be time to look deeper into the pre heat circuit, timer, wiring relay etc etc.

you will need to jump on it quick as it will be a total pig to start with the temp dropping just a ccouple of degrees from what it is now, let alone into the frost zone or below.

I guess a 306 doesn't have a common rail diesel engine. Hence there is no electrical injector. Normally when a nozzle ends it life it will produce black smoke (unburnt diesel) from the exhaust.

Since the engine is running the fuel pump is good (enough).

Glow plugs on the turbo XUD stay on for a couple of minutes after starting to aid cold running.

Replace 'em with a decent make, Beru are OEM and are cheap enough from GSF.
Avoid Halfords ones, there's a few horror stories of 'em not lasting very long.

tried a compression test? maybe a different kettle of fish, but one of my dads cars ran like that, and it was a burnt out valve with a hole in it. no compression on slow running, so ran on 3 cylinders, but at higher revs the air couldn't escape fast enough so it fired

thanks everyone.

Will try a comp test as well as changing the glows plugs.

Got a GSF not far from here so will pop over at the weekend.
