Of course the upside of high tintop DERV prices is that it makes a thirsty 7 seem relatively cheap to run

I usually only manage low 20s mpg though that should improve once the EFi is finished, it's running pretty rich under load....

For the same reason natural gas went up as soon as we converted my mum's house to gas from heating oil: because they can.

Don't forget that any diesel engine can be easily converted to run on chip fat. Last time I checked, that wasn't too expensive a conversion. People here do it all the time.

Just done one myself. Its very sensitive to the assumed average mpg's of diesel and petrol. Small changes either way change the winner due to the differential.

At the moment diesel still wins, but if I change car the difference in price needs to be pretty small to make it worth while (£2000 would wipe out 3-4 years of diesel savings) without taking enjoyment into it.

It's about time the price of all fuel fell with crude oil now at less than $50 a barrel, down from $147 a few months ago.

Some of the old mechanically injected diesels could run on vegetable oil, if they had the right kind of pump. The Lucas CAV pumps tend to die pretty quickly.

None of the modern common rail systems can run on vegetable oil, at least not for very long and parts are very expensive to replace on these. Perhaps you are thinking of bio-diesel which can be made from vegetable oil?
