I can't help with the cost of a turbo replacement but you could try calling Rovetec on 01642 672079 and they may be able to give you some idea.

I'm really trying to see if I should avoid the 1.8 turbo. Most of the estate versions seem to be 1.8 turbos

How long a turbo lasts depends a lot on driver habits and servicing --- a driver can kill a turbo by thrashing the engine which gets the turbo
stinking hot then switching off the engine cutting off the oil and coolant flow without giving it a minute or so to cool down.
Using cheap oil and not changing it frequently enough will also kill a turbo, ideally a turbo engine should only get fully synthetic oil and it should
be changed twice a year.
Car manufacturers were reluctant to specify this this Rover spec was 10w/40 semi-synthetic changed every 15,000 miles.
