you can get away with it in your own house, not legal obviously, but by the time he moves he'll be qualified anyway.

pat, assuming the garage unit is designed to have a max of 40amps, you want a 6mm cable protected by a 40amp fuse inside. You can get mcbs that plug in instead of the old rewirable ones, perfect. Ive never used an inline rcd myself cos all my work takes place in kitchens, and the boards i add all include an rcd there.

Dont pay more than £50 for that board Pat, if you cant find one for that i can grab one from my local place. Would be a 40amp rcd with 2 mcbs of your choice.

£30 in Screwfix with RCD and two MCB's.

Don't think you can go wrong there.
