Apparently (i.e. it's probably all a lie, i did read it on t'internet after all)...

In the US, pre-paid envelopes didn't used to be limited to just a certain weight, or even what you could fit into the envelope. You could stick a prepaid envelope onto a bigger parcel and quite happily send it back. This was subsequently changed after a rash of people posting boxes of rocks back to marketing companies, running them up huge postage bills
