I'd guess the official line is that burning off what gas is left in the system may cause air to be sucked into the system through another appliance or its pilot light.. I realitly I wouldn't be bothered by this.

And yes I know technically you should really do a tightness test before and after your work, but somebody was asking how to simply remove a fire and make sure they didn't leave a leak, I just suggested a way that required little or no specialist equipment.
