weird BMW problem today

well, kinda started earlier on in the week, after changing the radiator a few weeks back, i tie wrapped the fan shroud in place, as i broke the clips when i took it off. one of the tie wraps disappeared, not a trace of where it went.

anyway, so on tuesday got in the car to go to work, started it, there was a nasty grinding noise when i started it up, it was the fan rubbing on the shroud. fine, jumped into my dads car and went to work and thought i'd fix it later. didn't get a chance all week. went out today, clipped the shroud in place, and started the engine to make sure the noise was gone. engine started, no grinding noise was a bit rough, and conked out. thought it was just that i let go of the key too quick and didn't give a proper chance to fire properly. tried again. nothing. the enigne was turning fine, but didn't sound right, and didn't sound like any cylinders were firing. tried rolling it down the hill to start it in case the started was kanckered or something. didn't work. so was showing my dad to see if he could work out what was wrong, turned it over, nothing, but it kept getting faster and faster, til one cylinder started to fire, then a bit more and more until it finally caught on, revved like a good 'un but still a bit rough. foot off the accelerator, and it conked out again. turned the engine over and it started alright and ran and idled smoothly for a decent amount of time.

any ideas?

Sounds like there's something wrong with it.

Be wary of linking two events that may not have anything to do with each other.

Basically you need to get round that engine and check everything. Modern engines are so complex that it can be very difficult to deduce problems just from a few observed symptons. Have you tried the OBD?

have to say it was getting late today and getting dark, so haven't tried anything yet.

i wasn't so much linking the two events, but was more a case of it started bang on just a few days ago, been sitting for a few days, and now this.

any recommendations for a OBD scanner? went on ebay, there's quite a few, from £2.93 (+£15 postage) buy it now from china, to over £50 from britain.
don't want to get the wrong thing

Just a quick thought but is it possible you've knocked the wires off of the temp switch for the efi??

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

its a possiblility! i'll have a proper check at some point (its too dark by the time i get home from work)

the new radiator is just slightly different to the old one. there's an extra sensor in there, not sure what it is. but i've got no spare plugs floating about nearby to put in there

This may report high temperaturte so feed it a weak mixture, when actually you are trying to start from cold so it needs a rich mixture. Assuming you don't have a carb'd car with a manual choke this could be the problem
