TOP GEAR "Challenge"

I saw the earlier thread on top gear dumbing down.

I thought I'd post soemthing which has been annoying the hell out of me for years.

You know top gear insist on doing these bizarre races, one on a plane or something and on in a car, and see who wins.

Has no one else noticed the flaw?

Jeremy is filmed doing his cross continental dash, by a small crew in a (I would guess) transit van.

Do you imagine the BBC has a fleet of film crews and kit and vans? And they film Jeremy as he whilstles past at 200mph? recording about 10 seconds of footage, and then radio ing ahead to tell the next van and crew to be ready for jeremy?

NOPE

1 crew, 1 transit van, following jeremy the whole way.

It has nothing to do with the speed of jeremies super car, no 200mph cannon ball runs to beat captain slow, no close calls - just a boring road trip in a van following a very pretty, but ultimatly unnessisary super car.

As soon as I realised that a few years ago, I cant watch the stupid races anymore.

I love the rest fo the show, but they must think we are idiots.

Sure I read somewhere that the challenge is pretty much genuine, then when its done, the crew go back and do it again filming all the sexy shots with sunsets in the back ground or blasting down a long tunnel etc etc.

Never believe anything you watch on TV, its all lies!

Dangle I would hazard a guess that you are significantly above the average UK citizen intelligence level so work these sort of things out so have a poor 'light entertainment' experience compared to the masses who won't have a clue!

Don't beat yourself up because you are one of the elite!

The other side of the same coin is who cares?

I've often wondered about this myself. It never stopped me enjoying their films.

I reckon that many of the shots on the artic challenge were shot on the way home. How would you tell? Perhaps it's the same when they raced from Italy to London. They drove out the day before taking lots of overtaking shots on motorways and things. The Lexus SUV with the camera crew set out before clarkson on the way home and film him going past. They then compose a film to go on air out of all the fragments that they have. Remember that whilst clarkeson may have a 200 MPH car, he doesn't do 200 MPH in it.

I read in a boating mag when they did the Thames race. The race is apparently genuine and they then film the nice looking shots after.

But hey, the way their budget goes they may end up having 100 odd transit vans along the route and film the race live.

I watch it, my wife watches it as does my 12 year old daughter and 8 year old son...they must be doing something right! In fact the kids insist in watching old reruns before they go to school. The problem is the kids now argue about the merits of Aston Martin DB9 over a Zonda and I ain't got a clue what they are going on about.

They do look a bit silly if you think about it. But that's not what TV is all about is it? You used to have Top of the Pops too, and all but a handful were mimed; didn't seem to bother anybody, because people used to see the artists they didn't get to see otherwise.

I don't know how anybody can get anywhere in life THINKING too much. You'll just get a headache.

Now the filming on the way there is an interesting thought.

I might be able to watch the challenge more merrily now.

I just look forward to them destroying more caravans.

People on U tube have been taken to court for less.

James May was on (I think) Radio 2 a while back, and stated that many of the shots are done either before or after the actual event, since as you say it would be impossible to take them during.

They aren't usually racing on the roads though, it's generally several different forms of transport.

TV progs like Top Gear are what they are - entertainment shows. They have to be filmed in a way that makes them interesting and entertaining. Im not sure why people think they are anything else.

Next we will be compaining that James Bond films etc arent really real or that Coronation Street isnt real life.

I have the same response to the other post as well... Who cares? Its a entertainment show based around cars, its good fun to watch. If you dont like it, you dont watch it, its as simple as that
