Audi experts needed, spooks in the electrics

'98 Audi A4 1.6 came to me with a burnt out starter motor which I duly replaced with a recon unit. Now two
months later it's back with the same problem. Autospark was very good (well, he is a friend) and rebuilt it again
for a nominal charge of £20 despite us both suspecting something was deeply amiss.

Unit back on, started fine several times. Left it idling for a few mins and the starter engaged with no one in the
car, quickly opened door and turned ign off and as soon as it went back on the starter again powered up.
Ign off...back on and no starter. Turn key to "start" all works well and engine fired up and starter happily cuts off.

Three days now and I have been unable to get it to happen again. All wiring seems fine, no chafes or shorts to be
found and although the key feels sloppy in the barrel the electrical unit feels spot ok (it's off the car at the mo) positive
action and nothing sounds loose inside.

So, is there a computer control in the circuit that could be playing up or is it a conventional setup ?
If so should I replace the ign switch to be on the safe side and replace the trigger wire to the solenoid. Anyone know
which terminal this is before I poke holes in the cables with the multimeter.

Any other suggestions welcome

Oh the joys of Audi electricals
It sounds like the problem I had on my 97 A4 and it is a common fault with the ignition switch not returning properly from the start position. The plastic switch housing cracks and replacement is the only answer. Fortunately you can pick them up cheap on ebay. Like this one.
Audi Ignition Switch
Luckily you nonly have to replace the switch part so you retain the original ignition key.

Doh !
.....very helpful Mr W.......but I did leave it open for you

Ok...

Any suggestions welcome except sarky ones from the Whipster...or anyone else actually

Back to serious now,
Have already checked the switch condition as I'm aware of the cracking issue but this one appears
fine from the outside. Could open it up and enter the nightmare world of springs and tiny contacts
but then it really would be fekked

For the sake of a little over a tenner I think it'd be worth trying even if yours looks ok.
