1.4 fiesta tdci ('04) vs good condition 205 gti ('93)
Hi guys,
I got myself into the world of 7-style cars after going through a bit of a minefield trying to restore a rotten Capri back to its original glory.
There was so much work to do that it turned into a bit of a nightmare, but I have admit its given me a huge affinity with older style cars.
I currently potter around in an 04 fiesta, but on browsing PH for an alternative I've come across a lovely looking 1.9 205 GTI.
If I were to sell my car (for around £2500) and buy this one (for around £1500) that would also release £1000 which would go a long way to completing
my Dax.
Any views/opinions on the swap? I've only ever driven fords, does anyone have any experience of Peugout or even the 205? Am I taking a silly
backwards step and letting myself in for future problems?

205 GTI's have a good reputation for a reason. It really depends though on what you look for in an everyday car. If you want comfort, good
fuel economy and reliability then I'd say stick with the fiesta. However if you have some nice roads to drive on the way to work and
don't mind paying a little extra for fuel, probably having a little hickup every now and then, then I'd say get the pug.
It really is up to you and I'd strongly suggest a test drive before making up your mind.

Basically it was rubbish, at the time my friend funnily enough had one of these, looked identical to this one with a gross bright red interior, but it
was quite nippy. That was till he sheared a head bolt after confusing degs with ft/lbs  twit

Having owned a number of Pugs including 2x 205 GTIs (and the wife's current 306 HDI) I'd say go for the Pug and keep yourself amused with
a really fun little car.
HOWEVER....even the youngest 205s are 15/16 year old French hot hatches. If you need day in/day out relaible and economic motoring - i.e. commuting
to work then it probably doesn't make sense. At best IMHO the £1k surplus will get sucked into keeping the 205 in good order and filling it
with fuel.
Myself, I'm still torn between selling the Indy to fund another 205 GTI for summer kicks

I had a 406 estate for 3 years damn fine car, very gutsy though but got 135mph out it (according to the speedo...), it was a very smooth auto too. Sad
to see it go  as it was a company car

Thanks for the opinions guys, I know it was completely OT, but tbh the Fiesta has been causing me no end of problems since I bought it and I'm
looking for an alternative.
I nearly p/xed it for a toyota supra the other day! But really I'm after something small and well looked after and this 205 really fits the
bill

Personally I've never been a big fan. Engines are pretty crap in standard tune. One with an Mi16 engine would be better.
This would be faster, handle better and be much more reliable [and cheaper].

I had a 205 GTI, andf I can honestly say, I have never enjoyed owning a car so much. Yes, it was a PITA at times (completely stripped interior, leaked
like a sieve, nosiy, etc etc), but oh my god - smiles per mile were off the scale. You get used to working on them fairly quickly, and there is loads
of info out there when things go wrong (which they will!). I would have another in an instant, if I didn't already have too many cars! Pick a
good one, look after it, and it will hold its value, and maybe even increase!

Will look into the Mi16 engined versions, although a standard car would be what I'm after and I do want some cash left over.
P.S. was that link meant to be to a citroen xsara?

i had a 205 1.9 gti when i was 20 the best car i have ever had until i put it into a wall mostly my fault. drove like it was on rails and used to wee
all over my mates cars. i would love another but couldnt afford it
