Sky+ gone wrong

Firstly:

Happy New Year to one and all - hope you had a good one!

Now, I've woken this morning to find my Sky+ doesn't work. Wen I first turned it on, it would select a channel then freeze up ater 10 seconds or so. I tunred it off at the power, waiting a minute or so before turning it back on and now t's stuck on standby.

I;ve tried all the things suggested on the sky website (turning it off at the power etc.) but to no avail.

I've rang the sky helpline where the lady in the idian call centre ws next t useless and offered the sound advice of turning it off at the power or sending out an engineer at £65, who will probably try and turn it off at the power and then tell me I need to buy a new box.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Cheers

Steve

Isn't it amazing how a little 'incentive' can gain such a dramatic cost saving

Anyhow, Happy New Year all.

Does it work long enought to do a system reset, if so try the following.
Press Services 4 0 1 and then select Select that gets you into the instlation menu from there try option 7 if that dosent work try option 8

P.S. you will lose any recorded programs

I was advised by a sky engineer that turning off and removing the input cables from the dish for 30 seconds will re set most things.

Ours still freezes from time to time but power off for a while seems to sort it.

I might give that a go if I can actually get the thing to switch on, ut at the moment it's frozen on standby.

Sadly, this means we have kids DVD's all day (which I don't mind, but have seen them all enough times, and it's only a matter of time until SWMBO pulls out the High School Musical DVD's...)

4.choose option 7 sky plus planner rebuild.then repeat and choose option 8 full system rebuild.
5.it will delete all saved programmes but it resets and clears everything on the hard drive, and should be as good as new. hope this helps

Cheers Daniel - I'll give that a go to hopefully clear things up if I can ever get the bloody thing to switch on.

At the moment it's stuck on the red standby light, so can't even access any of the menus. The light is flickering slightly, which would suggest that it's struggling with something.

I've tried taking the cver of the box and getting as much dust out as I can without man handling it too much, but all to no avail.

By the looks of it, it may require a new box and a sky engineers call out.

A bit of research suggests that Sky might be in hot water because they've been pushing some software upgrades that are possibly flawed, but then charging £65 for a call out to fix it.

I've looked at Virgin Media and I can get a decent deal there, saving a few quid and getting a better service. I'll ring up tomorrow and cancel sy on the basis that if it's going to cost £65, I might as well move to Virgin instead. Then we'll see how quickly the price comes down.

i rang up sky and threatened to cancel it because my hd box was playing up and they are expensive to replace.Within 48 hours they were round and replaced my hd box for free. The man i spoke to on the phone at sky sorted it out for me with no £65 charge.
Just pull the power lead out from the back for a while because they are prone to system crashing.

I just ditched Sky+ for the new Humax Digisat PVR box - does everything the Sky+ does and more (soon to support 4 channel recording and BBC iPlayer) for £300 and no monthly subscription. Not some many channels but we get BBC HD as well, and if you've got Sky+ already it's just a straight box swap - easy.

£300 is quite a lot of sky subscription though if you don't have the movies and sports package. Also it doesn't look like you get Dave or any Discovery channels?

Cheers for the advice guys - I rang sky and told them categorically that I wouldn't be paying ANYTHING for an engineers visit.

Nedless to say, I had 2 engineers at my house at 0800 prompt on Sunday morning armed with a new sky+ box. All because I pointed out that if I was going to spend anything, it'd be on Virgin Media current deal and that their package for the same monthly subscription was a better deal. I might move to virgin anyway in the next few months!
