Storage heaters
Hi. My Mother heats her house using storage heaters. She came over mine today and told me she is having some problems with them.
1st one is cold on both ends but burning the paint off the middle section. would I be correct in thinking that two of the elements are not working so
all the power is going to the centre element?
What problems can you get with these heaters other than them just stopping.
Can they draw more power as they get older?
Any advise greatly received.

Take the bricks out - then move them. That's how they are installed in the first place.
Have to say that I loathe storage heaters.

Depending on size and from your discription it will have 3 elements.
It sounds like the outer 2 are shot.
What you need to do is first make sure it is cold.
then you will need a drop sheet under the heater.
Open it up remove the front section of bricks and replace the elements.
Put back as was and test.
Its hard to test the elements as they tend to fracture when warm but its worth a try with a simple resistance beep test but as i say the will tend to
test ok but when they warm up they will break and stop working again.
Best just to replace them.
I would also replace them all so you dont have to do the same again when the middle 1 goes.

They should be stock items in most wholesalers or online shops.
All you will need is the make and model.
There not cheap though about £15

If they are v old around 20 years ago they used asbestos insulation. even 15 years ago they were still using a bit of asbestos around the thermal
cutouts which was not so bad.
Not a big problem if you are carefull but read up on precautions first.
I used to work with the old ones and we used to bag them and take them to an asbestos dump when they went faulty - made a fortune out of it - happy
days!

I had an old storage heater in my old flat which was lagged with some old dusty brown stuff
I rang up the council who came round and tested a sample and said it was all okay.
Blooming heavy things though! If you have to remove it it's a PITA cos if it has got asbestos in it you shouldn't be whipping it open to
remove the bricks, especially when brown asbestos is used in them
