320D wouldnt start - very strange!
My tin top is BMW 320D tourer. 2002 150bhp. 95K miles. Had it 3 years, done 50K in it. Always started brilliantly.
Stopped for fuel tonight. Jumped back in and car wouldnt start. Turned over no probs but wouldnt catch.
RAC man came out, pulled pipe off front of EGR, while i cranked it over he squirted the very tiniest amount of easy start in and it fired straight up.
Re started a couple if times afterwards too. Of course im not sure if it will start in the morning yet.
Anyone any idea what the problem could be please?
If i need the codes reading does anyone local have a reader (Im in Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham).
Thanks in advance.

tempted to say glow plugs but you had already driven to garage so there was some residual heat to fire up again. The clue to this must be in the use of
easistart

hi if its been bad to start for some time it may be the fuel pump do you use proper fuel from the garage pumps as ive changed loads off pumps on all
make and modles off cars and vans wear pepole have tryed to save dosh by running it on bio cr*p.
all so ive none the glow plugs corse bad starting as thay done work like in the old days on newer cars thay are in place to make a cleaner start
up/cold running not cold start as in the old days

Its an odd one reminds me of a well known fault on petrol Hondas which after a number of years develop a bad soldered joint on the circuit board of
the main fuel pump and ignition relay -- symptoms are spookily exactly as you describe.
My guess you will have to see if it reoccurs but buy a tin of eezistart just in case.
Fault code reader will probably tell you nothing unless you read it with a scanner that reads freeze frame/live data.
or BMW it however best to use a Laptop interface running Carsoft which is amazingly cheap but gives very close to dealer level access.

Don't know if it's any help but on my 2005 Jag 2.0D with 92k miles (and many other Jag diesels of similar vintage) the EGR gets very
bunged up with carbon deposits. I took mine off, along with the inlet manifold and cleaned it all out with carb cleaner. You wouldn't believe
the amount of stuff that came out of there.

I know vw 1.9 pdi's get mega clogged up with black soot also to do with egr valves as all the crap is recirculated but is apparently a bitch to
clean and can stop variable vain turbos opening. Might be worth getting the inlet out to see if its covered or check out a BMW forum if they got one
might be a common problem.

Inlet manifold has had flaps removed and washed out last July, EGR cleaned out at same time.
Im just wondering if it would be recommended for me to try some fuel system additive in case the injectors are getting dirty?
Fuel - i only ever use pump fuel. Had car for 3 years and never used DIY bio-fuel or veg oil etc (book says not to). Local garage does sell bio-fuel
but the regular priced pump stuff. i dont use that much though. Do often use supermarket fuels.
Car fired up OK this morning and re-started when i got to work (only 3 miles away though). Could the regular cold starts and short runs over last 4
weeks have a part to play? We have done some longer 30 mile or so runs at weekend but i always drive steady these days to promote higher MPG.
Im convincing myself that a good quality fuel system additive (injector cleaner), full tank of quality fuel and take it out for a thrash might be in
order.

Is it the £59 carsoft package you are refferring to here? My word that is cheap for what it does. Looks like my laptop has a serial plug too (if im
looking at right bit).
Forgot to say earlier - car is stock standard. Never had ECU reprogrammed or anything like that.

My friends son has it for his 525 runs off a USB to serial port adaptor without any problem --- it really gives very close to dealer level access.
He bought his from "Arcadia In Car" --- as some of the ones sold on the Ebay are seem abit iffy but I have dealt with Alpha-bid on ebay
a couple of times and know they are safe to buy from.
