opinions please

The compression on my pinto engine has all of a sudden dropped to 100psi on 3 cylinders and 65psi on the other. When i removed the head and sump and pushed out the pistons i have found that the top compression rings have started to break up.
Everything looks to be ok apart from a couple of fine lines down one of the bores.
I would like to replace the rings and shells to freshen the engine, just to get through the summer before changing to a zetec next winter.
Do you guys think i will get away with it or am i wasting my money?
Cash is tight at the moment so doing the swap now is out of the question.

Thanks
Andy

Wizz around the bores with a bit of wet and dry to deglaze, not up and down but circular as a honing machine would.

Get the next size up rings for you pistons, push these into the bores and measure the gap, then carefully grind the ring gap to no less than 3 thou at the tightest point in the bores swept area then assemble on the pistons put back together.

Should be as good as new.

While the heads off get a couple of carbide burrs off ebay and a cheap drill for £10 and smooth the ports, better still get a copy of Dave Vizards book on tuning Pinto SOHC engines and grind the ports to tulip shapes and cut back the valve seats.

More years than I care to remember I did this on a 2litre capri, my mate had a 3litre with a strong engine, on the rolling road I was 4 bhp at the rear wheels less with standard cam, around 135 estimated at flywheel for a days work.

Only one of us was pleased!

Regards Mark

Check out your timing as well. You could be suffering from detonation which does destroy rings IIRC

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Thanks for the repies lads,
Jacko/ Will ,there is a fine lip at the top of the bore that almost dissapeared when i ran a honing tool down the cylinder.
Mark, what should i use to grind back the rings? i don't want make an arse of a new set Checked the timing and seemed fine, maybe the rings were just getting old.

Oh and Tom if you can lend me the cash,i will buy that engine. Not quite sure what i will do with it though. If i can get out of taking the kids to judo i will come along on tuesday.
