tin top starting problem!
my rover 200 (99) 'bubble shape' is having a bit o trouble starting! the starter motor turns but either it or the engine itself sounds
really grindy, and it take a while for it to turn over. This morning i went to start it and it just kept turning over and over, catching a tiny bit,
but not enough to start it. Eventually the battery nearly had enough i think so i got the emergency charger thing out attached that to the battery and
tried again and after a few goes it caught and started. I dont know what the problem is, i was thinking it could be the battery, but the starter motor
kept turning alright, then the starter motor itself as ive had a few of these but that is as said, still turning. This morning it was almost as if
there wasnt any petrol getting to the combustion chamber the way it wasnt firing so my frined said it could be spark leads or plugs?? but the grinding
sound it makes as it starts is the really worrying thing, its like the engine is siezed and the motor is really having to try hard to turn it over.
Normally after ive started it and driven for a while i can turn it off and start it up again no probs, even if ive been at work all day etc, just
problematic when starting it up in the morning or after a few days non movement. However today wen i started it up and drove in to norwich, (30 mins
drive) went in and came out again 4 hrs later, it still sounded grindy when starting, but did start up fairly quickly. Any ideas what the problem
could be ive tried to explain the prob as deeply as possible, thanks for any help

Has the timing belt been disturbed or has the alternator pulley been removed in the last few months ?
It is not unkown on Rovers for either the bottom crank pulley to be slack or the alternator pulley to be loose on the shaft and make exactly the
noise you describe when starting.
The cause is always improper tightening & failure to use Loctite when refitting these parts.
However it could just be the starter drive pinnion needing cleaned and freed off.

Sounds like knacked starter motor or solenoid to me.
Does it bump start smoothly?

i tried bump starting it today (just to try it) and it started as smoothly as can be expected of a bump start, no grindy sounds or anything, does that
narrow it down to the starter motor? oh and i havent touched the engine to pull anything off or anything for months!
