Brake pad detachment

Went to change the front pads on son's Clio only to discover that the friction material on the inner pad had come away from the backing plate!
This has grooved the disc to the point where the disc is scrap even though only about a third worn (or would have been). Car's only four years old.
Any chance of a claim on Renault given that it's a safety issue rather than wear and tear or am I being highly optomistic?
Cheers, Pewe

So long as;

you've always used the original pads and discs

AND

you've always had the work done by the main dealer

....then you should have a pretty good chance of getting the money back and the work redone.

If any of the above isn't true - then you've had it

Discs and pads are service parts --- specifically excluded from warranty. Although manufacturers and deallers tend to use the "service part" excuse too often as a way of getting out from honouring warranties (anybody got any Arnold Clark group warranty stories ?) in this case they would be in the right.

Life of brake pads depends very much on the driver most modern cars with normal driving style are designed to reach the manufacturers wear limit (ie 25% thickness left) at the 60,000 mile service.

If the pads are 1/3 worn on a four year old car with average mileage this would suggest the pads have been renewed before.

OK I agree with you, BT that they are service parts but they are OE Renault and the car has not been serviced other than by Renault main dealers.
My contention is that as they have failed in a safety critical way they aren't fit for purpose and recompense should be paid.
