OT: Pistonheads has too much choice!

after my replacement car purchase fell through:

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/917847.htm .

I'm now looking for a different car. Looking at the £1750 mark to haggle to perhaps closer to £1500 I've niggled it down to these three:

306 gti 6 (http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/893394.htm)

Nice car, doesnt look chavvy, quick but high mileage could be deal killer?

fiat stilo abarth
(http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/934432.htm)

Seems to be a lot of car for not very much money? fiat badge and dodgy semi auto box aside that is...

or stick with the 205 idea (http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/930783.htm)

brilliant car, old and high mileage but can definitely work on it myself. Could possibly sell for more in the future if I keep it sparkling?

What do you guys think? I'd love to hear your opinions . I've never driven any of these cars I'd like to point out. I have a 1.8 focus td at the minute.

P.s. sorry, not sure why those linkys arent working

Haha, well diesel goes a long way to explaining it!

Theres nothing wrong with the car at all, in fact its in vgc with no known issues but I cant help feeling its not the car for me. I'm 21 and dont need a family car, because I've been driving for a few years I can justify getting a sporty car without paying heartattack inducing insurance costs.

I have the car because my fiesta had several issues so my parents used it to partex against their new car, giving me the focus in exchange.

P.S. thanks for that McLannahan! and I'm after a smaller car Neil, but thats the only reason I wouldnt consider the Rover.

What about this?

Pretty much the same spec as the 306, but lower mileage and newer:

VTS.

I just changed to a 1.8 focus last year - but mines a petrol
I know what you mean about the family car, I'm only 27
I would have prefered a 3 door, but the 5 door was at the right time and for the right money - and the 1.8 blacktop is more than enough for my 'boring' everyday car

but since your looking at fiat's anyway....
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/930471.htm
just needs a little tidy up and big power increase

NOOOOO i hate the X1/9 so much, thats pretty much the only thing thats stopping me buying the Abarth now! So I dont get associated with it!

edited to add: £1117 is the cheapest quote on comparethemarket.com for the fiat, so I'll only be freeing some cash up in the very very short term!

Another vote for the Pug!

Out Pug had 187,000 miles on the clock, and 18 previous owners when we bought it... 99k is nothing!

If the Focus is a TDCi and it's not a questtion of releasing capital why don't you keep it, have it chipped and then you can use it as a tow car for the kit when you decide to sprint, race or hillclimb.
I stand to be corrected but the Focus has one of the sweetest chassis going.

306 looks nice, but be warned the 6 is a thirsty beast, you'll be lucky to get mid 20's per gallon with that.

I'm talking from experience BTW, had one of these for 8 years, put a smile on my face every time I went out in it.

Cheers

The Fiat five cylinder engine is very very difficult to do any sort of major service work on. It's an iterference fit under the bonnnet.

Then there's Alfa Sillyspeed by another name.

Check the amount of broken versions of that particular bundle of fun that come up for sale on ebay and autotrader.

I'm a fan of Fiats, but I really wouldn't.

Not even with yours...

Cheers guys, in summary ( for now!) I think the 306 gtis tend to be silly mileage and are modern enough for servicing and repair costs to be high, the Fiats insurance, 5 doors and poor web reviews put me off the stilo.

Pug it is, a few people on here have raved about it in the past, and I'm confident enough to work on it myself to maintain it.
