Is this Jag a good deal ?

Been offered this by some one we know fairly well, just need an idea as to value and whether it is worth that kind of cash?

Jaguar X Type Sovereign 55 Reg

Only 7, 000 miles on the clock

Immaculate condition

Winter Gold, cream leather interior

Touch screen/voice activated satnav, bluetooth, radio, 6 CD etc etc.

Only £14,500

Usual thanks in anticipation - this site has "never been known to be wrong" on these matters

X Types and S Types go really cheaply, just plummet in value from new.

Have a look on Ebay with finished sales- there's some bargains to be had!

It sounds a very very nice motor --- but much too dear you can pick up a 2007 model with more or less the same mileage for roughly the same money from about the same price.

I should add a few guys on the Rover 75 and MG ZT Yahoo group replaced their cars with X types or S Types and weren't happy. Main comment was the Jag felt over soft ( even compared to the 75 !) and wasn't near as enjoyable to drive.

The automatics use the JATCO 5 speed as used in a number of cars inlcluding Landrover, Ford Nissan Toyota and MG-Rover. While never the most robust of autoboxes it appears to be particularly fragile in the Jaguar. Anyone buying a Jag or Freelander with this tranmision box should get the fluid changed every couple of years.

In Nissaan, Toyota and Rover models it appears less troublesome but is nothing like as robust as the old BW slush boxes were.

I'd imagine you could get a new one for that - be more or less "at cost" price for Jag though!

Seems a bit high to me too. Maybe if it were from a Jag dealer.

Ok thanks for that - seems like it is overvalued and you can't really get into haggling with friends.
Tricky one as it sounds very nice and with 158k on the clock the faithful Saab aint as smooth as it used to be when new and fresh, as you can tell I don't buy cars all that often
Why are things never simple?

If you go to the UK Vauxhall site and click on "Servicing and Finance" then "Value your car" you can get a free Glass' valuation[1].

[1] I dunno whether it's a "proper" valuation, it only lists "part-ex" price. Although it does seem to agree with Paul Tiger's Parkers quote.

"Jaguar X-TYPE Sovereign
3.0 Petrol 4-door Saloon
5 Speed Automatic Four Wheel Drive
Year: 2005 55
Mileage: 7,000

Part-exchange Price:
Excellent condition:
£9140

Average condition:
£8230

Below average condition:
£7240

Lad at work has just bought an immaculate XJ6 on a 96 N plate for £200... over 30K new, Jags loose value quicker than Trabants...

And don't forget the X type is a Mondeo, only not as good.

My advice is be 100% honest tell him you are not looking to steal the car but the market for near new luxury cars has collapsed and his price is a good bit above the real world value.

If your friend really wants to sell it he will be back at a much lower price, I suspect he hasn't realised just how hard hit the values of near new big cars have been hit, when you get new cars being advertised by the Jaguar-Landrover for £8,000 off the list price then no way will the residual values hold up.

Well my wife will have none of the hassle of discussing price so it is dead in the water until they either sell it or met a reality check elsewhere, writing off a perceived £5k is not going to be an easy thing.
Thanks for assistance!

The chassis is shared with the mondeo and the only part of the engine that is shared is the block. Everything else is Jaguar.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Yes & no quite a lot of the rest of the components are shared with US Ford models.
