OT: handling an ebay car sale
look at this linky!
I've been trying to sell my car and buy another for the past month or so and I've finally secured a new one to collect this saturday.
On my current car I've listed it once before on ebay, on pistonheads and I've had private offers from people I know - all around the £2300
mark. I have a standing offer at this price with a dealer in northampton who I was going to sell the car to this week if it didnt sell on ebay (second
time round).
As you can see I relisted the car at £2500 or best offer with details of the standing offer and that I wanted a cash sale this week if possible. All
week I've been having nohopers offering me £1500 etc but last night suddenly it sold for the asking price to someone I've not heard from
before.
Now then, he has 0 feedback and he hasn't viewed the car or rung me asking about it, hes just clicked buy it now. He has emailed me saying hes
new to ebay and hes not sure what he needs to do next, that he has cash waiting and can I deliver it to derby. I've asked him to give me a call
but I've got all the documents with me at work so I could drive it round to his later (I have his address).
Any thoughts? I'm thinking too good to be true..
PS his name is also raylightdobbery...

how far is it?
If the fuel and time isnt a great loss to you if it turns out to be a wild goose chase than take a large mate and go round.

if he,s close to you then why not go see him, keep docs firmly in your pocket, if he shows the cash then maybe he is genuine but as says new to
ebay,
though with a "name" like that i would be cautious, make sure the cash is real, i wouldn,t take £50 notes from him tho.
hope it goes well for you but yes it does give reason to be cautious. (very)

I think you are right to be very dubious. Did the chap sound English?
I remember selling my mother's car a few years ago, and I had more than one Asian sounding person ringing, telling me there was cash waiting, no
bargaining, all I had to do was to deliver it and collect the money.
The price I was asking was not a bargain, it was OK but nothing special. If something looks like a fish and smells like a fish then it probably is
fishy.

if he is relatively close to you id make him collect the car.
Wouldnt trust anyone with a user name like that.
If you have to go and see him i wouldnt take the docs at all. Just say you are calling in to let him look at car. Offer him chance to back out. Delist
from ebay and sell for £2,300. TBH - for the sake of 200 quid i would have just let the dealer take it - nice clean sale, no hassle.
Ive taken cash for a car before and made the buyer go to the bank with me and pay it into my account.
CHAPS payment might be better option if the money is in his account, unless of course he can reverse a CHAPS after it has gone through (im not sure on
that).

Cheers guys, I'm glad I'm not being paranoid. He lives right next to derby trainstation so I was going to meet him with the car there?
Lots of people around at all times and I can get the train home if he buys it.

i agree with suggestion to take someone with you that you trust, another would be to keep the master key in your pocket until you are totally happy
with the deal, or maybe go to bank with him to get the cash,
be careful there are alot of scammers about, don,t show him your address( from log book ) as he may turn down the deal then come & steal the car
at later date, sorry but i,ve had my fingers burnt in similar way in past.

For 200 quid I wouldnt take the risk. Id have the nice easy safe sale with no messing. Go for the dealer.

If he wants to buy the car and he has the money with him, How far is it to get to a bank and ask to check the money.
Also you could do it on any shop. Just offer them a Fiver to check them.
And Get Someone With YOU!!!!
It is a train station, but tbh how many people do you think they would rush to help you?

The dealer is a 4+ hour round trip this is why I'm umming and arring and at 21 £200 is a lot of money.

Make him come to you to view the car, if he is happy take a reasonable deposit, when you are happy with that deliver him the car.
To be honest I wouldn't go anyhere near a meeting place he suggests or his supposed home address, if he is honest he will understand, but
don't do anything alone.

haven't read any replies to this thread, but if you've got his address (and you see him walk in and out of his house) and he's
paying cash, i don't think you can go wrong, as long as the notes aren't fake. if they are though, you have his address

Take a mate with you, make sure you ask to use the toilet (to make sure it really is his house) and keep your wits about you. If you go for a test
drive, check his insurance and make sure the mate rides in the back.
Other than the fake note thing, I can't see there being a problem. If you suspect anything fishy, as has been suggested, ask him to accompany
you to the bank. Make sure he hands the cash to the cashier, that way he's on CCTV handing over the money if it does turn out to be fake and
can't claim you switched it or anything.

Similar to other comments. As long as the notes are kosher then there shouldnt be any problems. If you could possibly get to a bank before handing
over the keys (make him come with you) you have had the cash checked and its all safe in your account.
Take someone else with you whatever you do though.

to update, i just spoke to Gary on the phone. He was quite nervous and I had to explain the ebay process to him. I asked why he had bought without
viewing and he said that he been looking for a cheapish family car since christmas and kept missing them. Apparently its getting to the point where
hes struggling without a vehicle so he snapped it up as it had FSH and 12 months MOT.
Hes happy to meet me at the train station and to wait until ive had the cash checked at the local post office before I do anything with the V5. Then
he'll pay for my train ride home.
And I'm taking a mate.

to conclude, the deal went down sweet as anything. The poor guy was a bit of a noob as was trying to give me money before Id even shown him the car.
Good job I'm a nice guy and talked him through the whole thing.
Felt more comfortable when I rang just before meeting him at the train station on a land line number and spoke to his wife.
I went with a mate, met at a public place, he was alone and was happy for me to count the money and have it checked at the post office.
