OT - Crane Support Design ? (any structural engineers out there?)
I've got a new project at work to design an outdoor support (/gantry) for a beam crane
only two problems: 1 I've never done cranes before (I mostly do substations) and 2 its got to have a 30m lift
Any experts one here ?
where do I start ? (I guessing BS 5950 + BS 2573)

before you start designing from scratch, have a look at whats been done already.
no point re-inventing the wheel

yeah, but I've never seen a design like this before, and the crane people don't want to help much (because they haven't got a design
like it either)
I should add that the cran itself is already designed and they have given me loadings - I just need to design the ~30m high frame to hold it up
there.......

Just a thought for you to consider if you're not really expert in this area.
Liability Insurance
The following bit from the CDM regs alone would be enough for me to turn to my boss and say 'no'. It's much too big a risk to be taking
- good as this site may be for asking such questions.
