fridge/freezer prob

Chaps,

Our fridge/freezer is faffing around - well, it been for some time, but now she's talking about replacing. I'm looking at cheaper options - like fixing it

Fridge doesn't work, but freezer bit is fine.

It's an integrated unit and it has no manufacturer labelling visible without taking it out of cupboard!

Is it worth getting a fridge repair person round, give it the big hammer persuasion or just bin it?

Cheers

ATB

Simon

Hi Simon,

I have heard that sometimes just turning them upside down for 24 hours and then back the right way up for another 24 hours before turning back on can sometimes help. Not sure what this does but I'm guessing some sort of airlock removal or something.

HTH,
Craig.

Never turn a fridge upside down!
The oil in the compressor ends up in the condensor and basically shags it!
Not worth the repair.
Gas has to be recovered.
Get a new one.....it's cheaper in the long run, plus new ones are normally more energy efficient.

the only fridge you turn upside down is one using ammonia/water absorption cycle most commonly in caravans/campers and drugs fridges in hospitals, shakes up the mix...

There should be two seperate stats on the fridge and freezer.

Short out the fridge one. Does it work now ?

If so get a generic stat from your local refrigeration wholesalers.

Wouldn't bother calling out a fridge engineer, usually not worth the bother, all tossers. But a new one.

Just been offered a freezer by my outlaws, it has an electronic controls problem, parts are too expensive for me to fix (and I'm in the trade).

If it's got separate compressors like ours it could be the fridge stat. It cost us £32 for ours to be repaired a couple of years ago

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Hi Nitram,
I would agree, don't turn a working fridge upside down but if it's not working and you say it's not worth repairing then it seems to me there is nothing to lose. I also know of a few people who have used this method successfully. My Dad was an electrical retailer for about 40 years and used this method himself to kickstart a few fridges in his time.

Here is a website which talks about this method dislodging a blockage. Linky.

I suggest this as a last resort before taking the fridge to the scrapyard.

Cheers,
Craig.

It won't fix a faulty stat turning it upside down either

not all of us are tossers... I work on commercial fridges (supermarkets etc...) and don't do domestics unless there in a canteen or cafe.. turning over a fridge on the type I mentioned works by remixing the ammonia and water (it's a reversible chemical reaction that needs a heater to work) and I agree that a thermostat is worth replacing.. if done yourself, changing a compressor or regassing is when it gets expensive...

When I fitted my kitchen I bought 2 fridges and a freezer... undercounter ones around the £110 to £120 mark... I figured if they went wrong I would replace them cheaper than I could buy a compressor at trade prices... the same thinking behind buying the cheapest dishwasher... you only use one setting so why would you want a "plate warming" programme...

my parents next door neighbour's small chest freezer broke down, "would you have a look at it"... Yup, compressors gone, buy a new one.. the man insisted I replaced even when I said it would cost less to and run... compressor cost £150 at trade price and he bought on his card.. I didn't charge him for the gas reclaim, the four hours it took or the new gas... he tried to give me £50 but I would'nt take it.. this is why I don't do private work
