Cleaning products for coolant system

just been reading on the astra owners club forum about what products to use when flushing the coolant system. some of then were saying to add washing crystals/powers to the coolant and run the engine to allow them to work and then flush it through.

is this ok to do, wouldn'y putting something like soda crystals in knacker up the water pump?

ant other tricks of the trade that people have heard about?

I'm sure I read that filling with vinegar, running for 10mins, then flushing does as good as anything....

I once had problems cleaning oil from a K series cooling system and after several attempts at flushing without success I tried some dishwasher powder . RESULT!

I didnt use any cleaning products when flushing my pinto block and it was well crudded up inside. I just removed the block plug and kept running water through until it ran clear. Ran it from several directions (back flushing etc). When i removed the block plug no water came out cos hole was blocked. I just stuck a probe in until water started to come out then let the hose do the rest. It wasnt totally clean afterwards but far better. If you have oil in the waer system then i guess a flushing agent will be a good idea once you have removed as much as possible with the hose. i seem to recall local factors sell a product made by Forte which is supposed to be good.
