Couple of "it will never happen to me's"

Been on the lookout for a particular car for ages, thought the right one had come along today, called the guy discussed a few things agreed a price, Mrs goes to bank for pennies, she's a tad excited as she will be main driver........

Things don't just ring 100% true on phone though, don't know what but I'm sure you all know the feeling, anyhow I decide to hpi the car before we travel, Mrs id agitated thinks I'm stalling, well, still has a heap of finance on it and he's not the 1st owner as he claimed either, called him mmmmmmm arrrrrrrrr "but I'll pay it off once the car is sold"

Not with my money you don't matie!!!!

So, into garage, overhauls on, car up in air, welder on, gas on, squeeze trigger, no gas, bloody bottles empty, one tap of gauge and it drops to zero............

So, if your buying a car fora few sods hpi it and if your welding one tap your main pressure gauge regularly, there was I thinking it don't leak much this when not in use................

Anyhow, enjoy the sunny weekend you lucky sods who's cars are on road.........

Now off to subscribe to that mag........

How did you agree a price on the phone when you hadn't even looked at it? I hate it when people ring up and say "what's your bottom price you'll accept".

You could have also asked him for proof of the finance and then got a bankers draft made out to the finance company and the balance if any to him. you could have even settled the finance on the phone with the finance company aswell that way you know it is paid off.

Well you hate me then cos when an advert says ono and I have a 300 mile trip I want a pretty good understanding of what Its going to cost me before I leave.

Its easy, if the car was as he described it I would pay him what we agreed, he's in the driving seat anyhow, I had already put my cards on the table by committing to drive 150 miles to view it, I'm not gonna do that then try to barter him down further am I ? Not from a very strong position anyway, he's just gonna say "no" knowing full well we must be well interested to drive that far ?


Now go and tap your gas bottles........


Another one just gone on pistonheads for less money anyhow, all happens for a reason....... This one is further away though so I will follow the same process, agree a ball park ish close to if its as described and not a snotter price before we leave.

eta........ Settling finance on the phone is all well and good as long as its not negative equity ? and the distance involved meant we really wanted to do it in one hit, what do I do about the "no previous" owners that it threw up to ?

OK, not end of the world but you know if you are the 1st owner or not, sorry, think if we dug deeper there may be more, not the one for us.

The moral stays the same "buyer beware"

When I sell a car, If someone phones up and tries to haggle me, I just quote them the advertised price. I never do ONO cos it just encourages devaluing the car.

It winds me up something fierce. If someone doesn't want to pay the asking price, then don't. A few percent is OK, but some people try to knock 10% off over the phone.

I think the point is, if you are distance buying, how can you trust the rest of the advert if even basic details are wrong/misleading?

It creates distrust and doubt in the rest of the advert.

Ref haggling on the phone, I've sold a few bikes etc. via ebay and the rest and yes you get messed around something rotten, but I don't mind being haggled a bit on the phone. If someone takes the wee, then the seller has to be equally hard nosed, and tell them they ain;t dropping anymore.

SIMPLES.
