Back Support

I had to come in from the garage yesterday as i had a really bad back pain (lower back) and this morning i couldnt even tie my own shoe laces
Anyway, while i was out on my rounds today (still in pain) i was wondering if there was some kind of support that i could get to prevent back pain?
Its subsiding now which is lucky as i was starting to worry, if i couldnt get into the garage, i might do something stupid like tidy my bedroom
If anyone can reccomend some form of back support, i would be grateful

youll weaken your back muscles if you use a support leading to further issues. That's why people only get given braces for back pain if its caused by something skeletal.

If you suspect it is something serious like a slipped disk or spinal problems then go to an orthotics specialist - he/she will sort you out for free.

youi pulled a muscle like me.

just remember to lift with the knees, and not the back, and don't bend over to work. always work at the right height, i.e sit on the floor, don't bend over

i didn't and i've been laid on the floor for 2 days now

then honestly I would avoid any support. your back is designed to be used and manipulated frequently and in all sorts of odd ways. If you're getting pain then its down to incorrect posture or lifting techniques - sorting these will give the best results.

I'd recommend a physio if it keeps happening .

I'm not playing down your discomfort by the way. My young brother has had similar issues recently and I know theyre crippling. His doctor told him to start rowing to strengthen his lower back, and hes not had the problems since.

Buy this

It is a great book, with very good advice on home treatment and prevention. I slipped a disc 10 days before going snopwboarding. It was so bad I needed 45 minutes to get to the toilet, as I physically couldn't move. After a few days of doing as the book suggested, I wass on the mend. I went snowboarding, and never felt another twinge....!

Try not to bend over the car when working on it, get it up as high as you can on stands ...

Mate, I've been carrying a back injury for too many years When it SHOUTS, listen!

Best thing you can do is get some decent up-to-date exercises from a sports physio and stick with them. The amount of time we all spend hunched over cars and lifting in awkward positions is asking for trouble.

Trust me, I take far too many painkillers just because I didn't listen when I should have.

One thing I always try to remember is to keep my lower back warm, quite often t-shirts aren't quite long enough when bent over.

Over time, and during the evening hours it gets cold and then the muscle is ripe for a pull.

It also saves my wife dropping a cold spanner down my arse crack when she is in a "funny" mood.
