dodgy brakes
hello all. I could use some advice.
My merc sprinter got mot'd less than 500 miles ago. Ive just taken a rear wheel off due to a brake fluid leak and found that i have barely any
disc left at all. I dont know how thick it started as, but its about 4.5mm thick now, which im sure is vastly worn. There is no way at all it was safe
500 miles ago. There is also no friction material to speak of.
Firstly, is it possible that so much has worn away that the piston is coming too far out causing it to leak? Ie seals past the end of the bore or
somesuch?
Secondly, anyone know how thick a new sprinter rear disc is supposed to be?
Finally, if it is the piston seals that need replacing, how hard is this to do, and any special tools? (it took me an hour to find enough stuff to get
the wheel off!)
Cheers!

has your brakes been binding Joel, with a decent diesel engine it would be hard to tell if they where binding or not.

the hand brake was stuck on for so long i wore it off, but thats a seperate mechanism inside the disc Just spoke to the garage, who reckons
there's no way the tester would have missed it had it been like that at test time, and is adamant that the tester also wouldnt have passed it
with a promise of it being fixed (as some do when they trust the garage that entered it). Lad who did the remedial work on it says they never had the
wheels off as it was the centre handbrake mechanism they worked on.
On the plus side, apaprently it can wear enough to loose fluid. Down side is, i cant afford new discs and pads!
