He could make a cooler using water evaporation as the refrigerant. He have to make sure the water was topped-up and it wouldn't make things
cold, just keep them cool!

It's Spain why not tile the roof with solar panels? I'd guess they're 12v but connect that with those ups battery things and an
inverter?

solar is great here at the moment and would be even better in spain. In my locost motorhome I've got a bank of leisure batteries and 2 solar
panels. In hot weather we have excess electricity (getting up to 12amps in sunny weather at hottest part of day, solar charge controller prevents
overcharging) so we could run a 12v cooler in summer. We run a couple of laptops, waterpump, lights, shower pump, inverter for mobile phone/camera
charging. In winter there's less light to run a cooler but the weather is cooler too ^_^
What's the cooler for? butter doesn't need a fridge, powdered milk. Beer though, that needs to be cold

how cool does he need it to be?
When i was at college we made a sahara fridge. Basically a structure held off hte floor. Had walls made of charcol (chicken wire and bbq bricks). This
then had a dish on the top containing water and cotton draped over the outside and in the water.
The water got sucked up into the cotton and down the sides of the fridge. The water then evaporated from the sides of the fridge cooling it.
