tin top issues

Guys,

My 1998 406 2.1td is niggling me at the moment.

When driving alone at a constant speed say 60 in top and you let off the throttle, after a second or 2 you hit the throttle again you can feel the engine juddering a couple of times like the engine mounts are loose / worn.

It is eveident in lowergears but its more pronounced in top because the engine is working against a greater resistance.

I am lead to beleive that the engine has a dual mass flywheel, could this be at fault?

It makes no noise on drive take up, there is no slippage of the clutch at all.

I have wobbled the enigne back and forth and it does seem to move a fair bit but i dont know how much is 'normal' or 'acceptable'

Its done 135K miles and upon looking through the history i can see no evidence of a clutch change within the last 60K miles, or any engine mountings for that matter - surely they dont wear out do they? i have never had to change one one on a car before.

Thanks

The top gearbox mount is prone to wear on 406's and 306's. This will give you judder when pulling away and when accelerating.

The bush is a rubber housing with e metal sleeve which the bolt passes through.
If you stripe down to the bush you will see the rubber has become oval. You can either replace the bush which are quite expensive or pack it with an old cooling hose or tape the sleeve which works a treat. Even if its just to prove that its that then replace the bush after.

I'd say that at that mileage it would be well worth replacing the engine rubbers or at the bare minimum checking them very carefully. I'd have expected the engine not to move very much at all, just pulling on it.
