205 MI 16 Flywheel Lightening

Hi All,

I have not long bought a Mi16 205 and within 1 week I have manged to kill it !!

I was at a track day and something must have let go,Engine oil had shot out from breather all over engine,Car idles rough when cold and oil pressure has went from 80 PSI cold to 50 PSI cold.Anyway back to my orginal point,I took the engine out the other day,I'm wondering if there is much to gain from lightening the flywheel when I've got the engine and box out,The flywheel and clutch are surprisingly heavy when bolted together or is there not much point in this ???

Not sure about your particular engine but in general it is better to lighten the flywheel a bit.

This improves acceleration at the expense of a little smoothness.

I would make sure that someone who knows exactly what they are doing do the work cos if it is not done correctly the consequences of a failed flywheel can be very dangerous...

Cheers

Mark

Have a look here to see the effects of a bursting flywheel if its not done correctly!!

Possibly the first thing o establish is which gearbox you have fitted. i.e. original gearbox that went with the Mi16 engine or a 1.6 or 1.9 GTI gearbox. All the same externally, but the ratios/final drive are different between them.

Fitting the 1.6 GTI box for example will reduce your top end, but improve acceleration. There's no difference in strength between them so no worries on bursting the 1.6 box when using with an Mi16 engine.

After that then yes it would be worth lightening the flywheel a little - properly!

If you can runt to it then Sachs and the like offer competition flywheels and clutches ready to fit.

I fitted the 1600 box when I got the car,The flywheel thats fitted has the trigger ring,This is no longer required due to the fact it's running carbs and the tdc sensor is removed.I was told there was a bit of weight that could be removed by machining the trigger ring ??
