do you defo want an lcd?
i went for 50" pioneer 508xd and it is stunning! they have released new models since then though and do a 42" version. they are not cheap but they are as good as it gets. am sure with freesat HD you only get a couple of hd channels so maybe not worth it (unless you watch itv lots)

i went for the panasonic 46" plasma HD with freesat (and freeview) built in - very impressive!

there are a lot of channels on freesat that are not on freeview eg "movies for men". horror channel - the wife likes this one, not sure how to take that

we are using the old sky dish - (60cm i think) and it works fine with no adjustments
go somewhere like CPC and you can get a sat locator for £££'s

save your money, look at your neighbours dishes to give a good indication. Then the old trick of final adjustment with someone at the TV.
They don't need to be at roof height, just good line of sight to the sky.

We've just bought a 32" Panasonic HD Freesat LCD TV and it's fantastic.

We were very impressed with the Panasonic LCD TV's when we had a look at them in the local shop and then bought on line for £180 less than the shop best deal.

Online from here

i'm debating the same thing (LCD or Plasma).

Plasma is better but LCD is easier.....

(can't lay plasma upside down so have to be careful transporting, issues if you leave the same image on the screen a long time etc)

it seems that up to 36", LCD is better
after that plasma has the edge
the picture quality on my plasma is superb

you can also get burn on lcd tv
i have plasma and need to replace as fault with hdim having no sound
and i will be getting plasma again
what do you use the tv for, fast moving films or sport get plasma works better
also dixons do good deals on tv and then get currys who own dixsons to price match in shop

also dont just get for freesat you would be better geting a motorised sat set up
have a look on alsat for good deals my full hd set up was less than £200

plasmas are far better on larger screens and handle motion far better. visible contrast is also far superior as is wide angled viewing! lcd's are better in smaller screens. if it was me and you are thinking of a screen that size i would go panasonic or pioneer 42" plasma! if you want me to post you some mags i will be more than happy to.am an electrician and also do home cinema systems

If you have the room setup for it a DLP projector is very good and you can have a screen pretty much as big as you like (within sane limits).

I've just bought a Panasonic LCD screen (26 inch) best price I found was in costco (inc 5 years extended guarantee), they have all the way up to 50" in the store. Richer sounds also have good prices but the Newcastle store only really have LG sets on display.

Sadly I find upscaling artifacts a really painful experience (on all the sets I've seen) so the picture is far inferior to the 22" CRT it replaced (only changed as the old set was dying rapidly) and CRT seem impossible to buy.

I'll be facing the same decision soonish! I know LCDs are getting better and better in terms of viewing angle, contrast ratio and motion/speed, but is plasma still miles ahead, or is LCD catching up?

Is it fair to say plasma doesn't seem to do high res that well? You seem to have to go to a huge plasma to get 1080p, whereas smaller and smaller LCDs offer this mode.

What about this new LED one I saw in Costcos the other day?

For LCDs, how important are these high refresh rates - 100Hz etc etc? One I saw in Costcos was 600Hz! I guess chosen because then it can scale down and offer true 24fps, 25fps, 30fps etc etc?

Such a minefield...

full HD is pointless on small screens as you wont be able to notice the difference unless you sit really close.

spent ages the other night trying to set up a mates new LCD and couldn't get it to look right. my plasma needed a couple of minutes tweaking and is a superb picture

Wow it's amazing what half an hour with google can do to clear the fog caused by gawping near comatosed at a huge bank of giant TVs in Costcos ...

So there is no LED TV - it's marketing BS for a normal LCD TV with LED backlights.

600Hz being trumpeted for plasma TVs is in no way, shape or form comparable to the 120Hz, 200Hz figures being trumpeted for LCD TVs. Comletely different technology.

Ah it's getting a bit clearer now...
