I use AVG free version 8 and it is great.
I have used mcafee and norton and neither were as good.
But thats just my opinion.

I have used mcafee and norton also and been far from impressed, they seem to slow and block all the things i want to do to.

Same here, having said that i have just binned AVG in favour of Avast because AVG seemed to slow my pc down quite alot.
Must try harder

I used to use AVG, but the best option is to move over to Linux, no one writes viruses for that OS, and if they do then the anti-virus software is all
free anyway

avg is great if the pc is half decent, otherwise avast is less resource hungry. Both good products though.

Had AVG - upgraded when I had to, too CPU intensive and slow...
AVAST is better!

Rootkits
Could be wrong but I believe Avast can detect rootkits, AVG can't , AVG also slowed my compo toooo much.

Avast for free, AVG have remarkable ability to bugger up and kill useful files.
But personally I swear by nod32, it's not free, but it's very good and £30-odd quid a year isn't a steep price to pay to keep stuff
safe.

Avira ---- latest paid for versions give a very high level of protection. Unlike some of the others mentioned it looks and feels like a pro level
tool.
I have been using, installing and recommending it for many years.
Only fault with the free version is the update server is very slow and sometimes times out.

AVGFree not as good as it used to be so I don't recommaned that anymore. I'm using Kaspersky as its free with Barclays online banking. You
can get licenses as cheap as £15 if you look for an OEM version.

Just about no software can guarantee to detect a rootkit, the better av programs will pick up a root kit trying to install itself but it is a
checken and egg situation the av software has to be installed on a clean machine.

I had a rootkit infection once, that rather than Avast detecting and removing, it was totally disabled by. Took a bit of getting rid of that one!
Still stick with Avast though. Swapped over from AVG years ago when that started crashing all the time, even on fresh windows installs.
Plus pirate phrases are cool.
