Any TV repairers out there

i have a 37" LG LCD HDTV, its about 2 years old and has been working perfectly until last week.

i think its an intermittant fault but today it just won't display a picture or sound (the standby light remains green) some times you can turn it on and it will display the picture and work fine for several hours but then the screen just goes black and it won't display a picture or any sound, infact the only sound it makes is a squeal or the no transmission noise (white noise or whatever its called). but this can happen after 30 seconds, 10 minutes, half an hour, an hour, its totally unpredictable.

and when the screen goes black none of the other tv options are available, i can't even get the menu up to switch between Digital TV, normal TV, AV channels or any of the HDMI ports.

unfortunately its not under warranty and the LG manual suggests taking it to an LG Specialist for repair, but im sure that will cost a fortune!

Any ideas

If it's under 2 years old, regardless of the warranty you were given, I'd be banging on to LG about fixing it for nowt.
2 years isn't long enough for such a large (and expensive) purchase to last.

EU consumer rules say the minimum guarantee for member states is 2 years.

According to the SOGA goods must be of merchantable quality and fit for purpose, a telly that breaks after 2 years isn't in my opinion The SOGA says you can claim up to 6 years after purchase. Success seems to depend on how much the item cost and whether for the price you should've expected it to last longer.

I'd send 'em a couple of recorded delivery letters, the final one would be marked on the envelope, "last correspondance before legal action" the last time I did that I got a very nice phone call from my cable company (up until then I was ignored and fobbed off) with an offer to double my broadband speed, lower my bill and a free wifi router

Moan and whinge at 'em I say

Same happened to me with Curry's, told out of warranty should have purchased our 3 or 5 year deal, sorry.

Quick call to trading standards who give you a reference number, google for some suitable words on sale of goods act then a couple of recorded delivery letters, one to curry's other to trading standards waited two days and cheque for the full purchase price landed on the floor.

They collected the old TV, job done.

TV's should last at least 3 years, they either have to repair or replace the insurance policies are a con as by law this is offered when they sell you expensive goods like this.

Regards Mark
