OT. Cheap sat-nav upgrade?

My mate has a Garmin Streetpilot c550 which I borrow occcasionally. The maps are 2006 so as a thankyou I thought I'd see what it took to upgrade it.
After going through registering it on the Garmin site I find no free upgrades are available & it'll cost £73 for the UK maps!
A quick google search found a load of entire new sat-navs for under £100....
Another search found this:

How does the card work, do you transfer the memory from the card to replace the out of date maps or do they just stay on the card & the original maps are just left unused in the memory? The latter sounds good, just buy the card for the area you need & change it as needed.
More importatly are they any good?!
