What makes you think you don't need lights for the mot?
But then I suppose you don't need them to TAKE the test - only to PASS!!

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the
error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

According to a mate who had a buggy passed through MOT with no lights there is a clause for 'day light use only'. If a light IS fitted it MUST work
though. Obviously brake lights are essential! As for racing, I have no idea!
shit happens! (but why always to me!!)

I had a motor bike once that had an MOT but no lights.
The rule applied because the bike was registered before 1972. The same could apply to cars.

And this of course:-
Extract from 750 MC Locost series regulations
5.10.1 Exterior lighting : All exterior lighting including headlights, side, Tail and indicators must be fitted and functioning to MOT requirements.

The key word here is FITTED.
If the car was registered before 1972 then it would pass an MOT without lights and be eligable to race.
Not many Locosts registered before 1972 though
Only those made by Mr chapman

age dont matter, the mot maual says you dont need lights if the car is used in day time only, lights must be masked up, or wiring removed, or no
lights at all. my locost is pre 72 reg and i built it, free road tax.

I'll print this once more.
5.10.1 Exterior lighting : All exterior lighting including headlights, side, Tail and indicators must be fitted and functioning to MOT requirements.
I think the words MUST BE FITTED sort of solve this one 2002 or 1902 the regulations state that the lights MUST BE FITTED no exceptions.

Bass mate,
I'm not getting through am I?
Road MOT fine, you don't need lights
The Locost race Regulations require them to be fitted and working.
This is why the racers fit head and tail lights, the car would fail scrutineering without them.
which I think answers your original question.
Hopefully

If Chris is quoting the rules when he says...
5.10.1 Exterior lighting : All exterior lighting including headlights, side, Tail and indicators must be fitted and functioning to MOT requirements.
...then surely the lights have to be working?
If they don't then they wouldn't have the word FUNCTIONING in that bit.

The point appears to be:
The level that those cars that require lights has to reach in an MOT is the level you have to be at to qualify to race in the Locost series.
It really isn't difficult to grasp if you think about it.
