A Highway code question - turning right
Was on the way to pick troublsome tot up from nursary last night ( mrs was working late ) The Normal way the road was closed so went the main road way
( never been on this road )
So pulled of the main road and entered the village from the other end. The nursary is in a small rural village narrow roads ( 2 cars can pass with
care ) I was following a car who indicated right and pulled of the main road ( his car was now fully in the side street ) when I am behind him his
reverse lights come on and he starts to reverse anyway not sure he has seen me I keep going as I am virtually passed him by this point , a minute
later I have pulled up outside nusary and the same guy pulls up and starts shouting that I am driving without due care and attention that he is going
to call the police a little shocked by this point.
I state that,
A, he has left the main road into a side street therfore has to give wasy to trafic on the main road regardless if he is going forward or
reversing.
B, I have never been on the road and did not know the junction was so tight and that he mayneed to reverse to get arround the bend.
So I recon the bloke does not have a leg to stand on but intrested to know the thoughts of the collective.
so a drawing of the junction
junctionq

Reversing back into the main road??
The Police won't be interested, no accident occurred, no one was injured. They'll politely tell him to go away whilst calling him a tosser
under their breath.
I've noticed a lot of people think the highway code is null and void around schools.........

IIRC, the highway code states that you must not reverse from a side road or driveway onto a main road. He's in the wrong.
And anyway, you should hve just unfolded yourself out of your car - that would have shut him up sharpish! Not many people carry on shouting when they
realise that the shoutee is 6 foot 6.....

He is obviously a cock. Even if you knew the road it would make no difference. He was reversing onto a main road and if he couldnt make the turn in
one then he cant be that good a driver, especially if hes been round that junction before.

It seems the guy is exempt from rules 201/202 in the highway code.....
201
Do not reverse from a side road into a main road. When using a driveway, reverse in and drive out if you can.
202
Look carefully before you start reversing. You should
• use all your mirrors
• check the ‘blind spot’ behind you (the part of the road you cannot see easily in the mirrors)
• check there are no pedestrians (particularly children), cyclists, other road users or obstructions in the road behind you

It never ceases to amaze me how people who are in the wrong argue so much.
You are in the right - if you hear any more about it, you could reasonably complain that he used threatening behaviour as a result of road rage.

if anything comes of it, simply deny the event ever happened. It will be dropped immediately as the police will be powerless to prove otherwise and
know it.

It always amazes me how many people reverse from there drives onto a main road, you can see them struggling to get out because they cant see, if they
reversed in and drove out it would be some much simpler.

I would get in his face and ask him why he followed you to the nursery, and that the police might be interested in that.
Theres no excuse for him to follow you to give you a load of verbal.
I fuckin hate people like that. Hes clearly trying to intimidate you, and youre well within your rights to defend yourself if he approaches you
aggressively.

everyone else has told you whats what, but cant resist adding my 2p.
I was hit by a car two weeks ago while turning right at a junction on my road bike. My right side is still a mess and I've got no strength in my
right hand (writing is a struggle).
The driver stopped but only to get in my face about rights and wrongs on the road. Completely staggered me how he could think overtaking an indicating
cyclist 50 yards in front was within his rights! Some people seem to think "highway code" means you have to operate in such a way to give
them absolute freedom to do what the hell they want safely.

Thanks Chaps nice of you to confim my thoughts.
Been chatting about this in the office and we all agree I have done nowt wrong.
We have decided that I should have:
1) reported him for verbal abuse and
2) ignored him
3) responded with
"using YOUR Rule book ' you would have to a complete standstil every time someone turned right in front you yust in case they choose to
reverse. "

Try reversing into my drive...you won't be able to get out of the car without climbing over to the passenger side!

Come on now, everyone who has ever seen Beverly Hills Cop knows that it is a banana you use.
A similar thing happened to my wife a few months back where she narrowly missed running over a guy's wing mirror which was lying in the road
after having been knocked off by the previous car. She not only nearly ran over the wing mirror but nearly hit the driver of the car who was running
across the road in front of her.
He then got in his red escort van and set off in hot pursuit. For reasons we don't yet understand he followed my wife home and accused her of
knocking the mirror off. I was in the house at the time but was unaware of the situation to begin with. My wife was busy unpacking the shopping when
the doorbell rang and the guy was back again, ranting and raving like a complete idiot. I became aware of raised voices this time and ran down the
stairs just in time to see him speed off in his van. He had been quite abusive (swearing etc) and threatened to go to the police and report the
accident if she didn't pay up. She basically told him to "go away" in no uncertain terms as my wife is not easily intimidated to say
the least!
Anyway, after hearing the whole story I was raging and set off in pursuit of this red escort van with one black front wing (quite distinctive) with
the intention of either getting the number plate and reporting him to the police or kicking the s**t out of him for threatening my wife (hadn't
decided which at that point...).
I drove around for half an hour but couldn't find the twat (probably for the best...) so I went to the police station and explained what had
happened. As I had hoped, the police sergeant was very interested in the fact that this idiot had followed a woman (with kids) home and threatened her
on her doorstep. He said that he too hoped that the guy followed through with his threat to go to the police because he was looking forward to having
a a little chat with him...
I never heard any more about the incident. To be honest I think the guy was trying his luck by trying to frighten a women into paying up for something
which she never did having failed to catch the vehicle which actually did the damage. I just don't think he expected to come across such a
strong minded woman who doesn't yield to intimidation. She is a teacher and has to deal with unreasonable parents from time to time... Also,
her car never had a mark on it so it seems unlikely that she could have knocked his mirror off without damaging her own car. She tried to explain
this to him at the time but he was in a blind rage and wouldn't listen.
I'm sure your incident will be forgotten about but if I was you I would find it difficult to resist the urge to have a quiet word if I came
across the guy again. I wouldn't be surprised if you get a full apology now that the heat of the moment has passed. Often the case with road
rage incidents.
Craig.

Didn't you tell him he should have used his handbrake to make the tight turn, thus requiring no need to reverse!

Unfortunatly the DVLA don't check to see if your a complete wanker before giving out driving lisenses.
If some one follows you somewhere with the intent to threaten you they are acting well outside the law and could be charged with all manner of
offenses and in most cases the law would be on your side if you decked him the moment he got out of his car.
going back to being over taken whilst indicting right, its not just something to worry about on a bike, the road that leads on to the one I live on
has a 30 limit but there are always tossers doing close to 50 (And beyond) and I've had these idiot overtake me whilst I'm indicating and
braking, I actually tried to crash into one (I only wanted to tap him but it would have done a fair bit of damage) the only thing that stopped me was
my driving instructor using the other brake.
If someone follow you like that and you spot whilst your still moving, you should brake hard when they're right behind you and get them to smash
the front of there car into yours, this should imobalise them, then phone the police and say they were chasing you, someone I work with did this once
and the other guy went to prison for 6 months.
