Garage Insurance
Does anyone know of anyone who will do specialist Garage/workshop insurance? My contents cover only goes to £2500 and you can't extend the
cover... failing that - any good content policies that let you have a decent level of garage cover?

I've just looked this up on my insurance policy.....yawn. (Its with Direct Line by the way..)
The garage (and it's a stand-alone one) is regarded as part of the definition 'Home' together with any other domestic outbuildings.
This means that it's contents come under the 'Home and Contents' definition and is therefore covered under this (up to it's
covered threshold value shown in the schedule)
I have to declare any individual items worth more than £2000 though.
Apparently this arrangement (where contents cover includes the garage) is standard for most home and contents policies....DO CHECK YOUR OWN AS YOURS
MAY DIFFER!!
I suspect that this means that the security that you have declared on the insurance agreement for your house (locks alarms etc, must be the same in on
the garage to get the cover)

You have to be very careful with this one. I had to move from Prudential when they put in a £2500 limit on losses from the garage, good job I read my
policy document each year when I renew. Currently with Endsleigh as they either don't have a limit or it is more than enough, can't
remenber which. Do ask, and don't accept the first answer which is usually "the policy covers your garage contents". There is often
a limit, car parts are not covered and I even had someone tell me that if I had "that" value of tools I was obviously a tradesman and a
domestic home insurance policy didn't cover "business stuff"!

Ive also been told that if the tool is considered a profesional one ie Snap-on then its not covered under a domestic policy.
If you do find some insurance for the job that doesnt cost a fortune then let us know..

Even though I've seen people with that value of fishing gear in their garage, and he wasn't a professional...

Believe it or not Marks and Spencer home insurance will give you 'Unlimited' cover on your contents of any garage/outbuildings.
The down side. . . . They will NOT cover any vehicle or vehicle parts.
I spent days on the phone before someone on here suggested them.
I wanted good cover because of my tools, ie; a lifetimes collection including three lathes.
Guess the car engines will now be re-classified as 'Generator engine' and 'Water pump engine'.
They also class boats as vehicles.
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

i've thought about garage insurance a few times lately, my problem being my garage is nowhere near my house so household insurance isn't
going to cover it
