Claiming back PPI ??? anyone done it ?

I am considering claiming back the payment protection insurance that i ended up paying after getting a loan from Citibank about 4 years ago, at the time i had no real choice and due to my connection with the now ex-wife, her details were affecting my credit rating so badly that i had to unfortunately use Citi who basically spanked me with interest rate etc..

I worked hard & payed it off in full & also a year earlier than expected.

Im now tempted to go for the PPI type claim back to see if i can grapple back some of the extorsionate money they got out of me but am unsure if its worth bothering ?

The PPi set me back nearly 1200 quid over the term & i was not given much choice at the time to omit it from the loan, if anyone used Citi - you will know what i mean !

I keep getting calls from a company that say they will do it all for me & will take 25% of the final settlement but im not too sure whether i fancy signing anything that will end up in causing me grief, or problems with small print etc.

Has anyone done it ? is it worth it ? do you have any company recommendations if you have ? or do i just put it down to experience & forget about it ?

Cheers Andy

put a claim in its easy. Welcome finance and Citi bank were the worst for making people believe customers "needed" the insurance. and if "you" believed you had been told you need it you will get 100% back plus interest.....

I received a letter from Liverpool Victoria a short while ago saying they owed my £50 due to mis-sold PPI over my insurance term.

They were extremely pushy to give me the money asap and settle the matter very quickly. I found my old agreement and work out id payed over £850 over the term. I contacted them and asked for the matter to be looked into.

Funnily enough I was called the next day with an apology and by the end of the week had a cheque in my pocket for £863 !!!

Moral of the story, contact CITIbank and tell them you feel you were mis-sold the policy and want them to look into it. Don't instruct a third party as you find they may take a fair portion of what your in-titled to.

DON'T use a 'claims company' to help you, they will take most of the money for doing very little.

There is a standard claim form available from the banking ombudsman. Simply download it, fill it in and post it off to Citi. You must send it to them first as the banking ombudsman will not adjudicate on a claim unless you have been refused or ignored by Citi. If you don't get compensation from Citi after 4 weeks or so, then send the form to the ombudsman.

Good luck

I have thought about doing this several times, had 100s of calls from companies offering to do all the leg work etc. However, it was today actually, I got another call yesterday, humoured the caller by listening answering various questions then it dawned on me that i did have a loan back in 2005. All the guy was interested was getting acc details. When I said I'd thrown out all documents relating to the loan they gave me the number to call to find out the details. (Halifax). They said get acc details that's all don't ask questions around PPI. So phoned the Halifax, got my old acc details. The guy asked what's it concerning so told him. PPI claim. The guy was very helpful. Pulled up all the scanned in docs and told me exactly what I had signed and emailed me copies detailing the agreement. Turns out I wasn't entitled to claim. Fair and square......
But my point is, you DO NOT need these companies to act on your behalf. banks are legally obliged to cough up, so just a well placed call to the right dept and I had resolved my own case in 20 mins.
The duration of the claim to process is the same if you do it or a company, circa 12 weeks. Difference is they get 25% for nothing really.
Pursue it yourself and save a few quid, that's if you are entitled to it!

Hi Steve,

As bad as it sounds, ive been so busy with work & a baby on the way (due in 4 weeks) that i've not done this yet.

I downloaded the forms to fill in from the ombudsman, i am planning to do it when im off on paternity leave as i don't seem to be home much at the moment, taking the work whilst i can.

General opinion seems to be nothing to lose but do not use one of these companies as they will take a hefty chunk, saying that though, if time is scarce i suppose its worth getting them to do the work if it means coming out of the other side with something, rather than ending up never bothering & getting bugger all back

If you cant remember where you may e owed it from then its probably worth using one of these companies, try a google search if you have the name & detials of the company that keepon asking you. They could well be legitimate.

I will keep this thread updated because im going to struggle to buy megasquirt & coil overs so this may be a way of raising the cash

I say go for it & we can both see if we end up with anything.

Alll the best & good luck - Andy

do NOT go through one of these companies. phone the lender, put in a claim over the phone, they're legally obliged to correct it. there is no need for any other company to be poking about in you accounts. if it was mis sold, you WILL get it back

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

I'm in the middle of claiming this back from Nationwide for a loan I had nearly 10 years ago.

I'm still waiting to hear the outcome but did find out from them the other day that when you put in one of these claims it is only allowed to run for a maximum of 56 days. Only got 18 days left!
