Cav Clutch
Anyone familiar with Cavalier gearboxes? Trying to change the clutch and Haynes seem to have a very different definition of a 12 tooth spline key to
me. They say that you should take off the gearbox end plate, remove a circlip, use the aforementioned key to remove the fixing from the end of the
input shaft, then withdraw the shaft. You should then be able to compress the clutch plate and remove it from an hatch in the bell-housing. I'm
having problems removing the fixing from the rear of the input shaft. Has anyone got any suggestions? Photo to follow.

have you un -done the bolt in the end of 1st motion shaft?you need a slide hammer to pull shaft out, allways use a new circlip, the compressing clamps
sometimes come with a new clutch(usually cheaper from vauxhalls),the rest is easy

have a set of these, but there's nowhere to put them. There isn't a traditional bolt in there.

I can see the hole, but it was a little hard to see if it had a thread because of light levels. Have only had the car for a few months and am sure
that it's had the gearbox opened up before as the earth strap is missing, so it's entirely possible that the bolt is missing too. If it is
missing do you think it would cause difficulty in selecting the gears? Thought it was the thrust bearing, but not too sure now.

What a bugger! Turns out that in 1992 they changed the design of the input shaft. As a result on post 92 boxes the input shaft can't be
withdrawn, therefore removing the clutch with the box still mated to the block is no longer possible. Who designs these things and why take away all
funtionality?

Yeah, it looks like you should be able to remove the clutch without breaking the engine and box, but the fitters at the local Vauxhall garage told us
that with that model you have to drop the box to change it. They recon that there's no other way. Still, have just put it back together and
towed it to the local garage. They can sort it in the morning. Again, thanks for all your help though.

Can you remove one drive shaft like on the mk5 escort and pull gearbox out far enough to get at it without removing it completely.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

There's only an inch to play with at the back of the box, so might be a little tricky. Have given up and cloaked it with a Not My Problem
Field... It's now on a mechanics forecourt.
