intrinsically safe camcorder

Anyone know where I can lay my hands (buy or hire) on an intrinsically safe video camera or camcorder for use in a class 1 explosive environment?

Rich.

Sounds like one of those "if you have to ask how much..." devices.

Google "ATEX Class 1 camera"

I can't remember where we bought ours but it was crap and expensive, 700 odd quid to buy. I went to a trade show last week and saw some pretty good kit.
Have a look here linky

as said by others, search for ATEX

I have a Wolfe zone 0 led torch which for the 60 quid it cost is unbelievable

Know nothing about the subject, but can you not put a "normal" camera inside a proper sealed box type thing? As per the old school fluro tube lights?!

Whats the job?
I'd just use an underwater housing but it would depend on what the job is and who is paying for it!

Off the top of my head I'd say most cheap solid state camcorders with fixed lens would be intrinsically safe but not certified as such by the manufacturers - certification costs the dough not the hardware as it is fairly easy to comply with the regs but there is little demand.

Check out the specs to achieve this rating IIRC you are OK up to 24v and no exposed mechanical switches.

As others have said it depends on the application and who is going to be policing them!

Cheers!

It's for work, I am struggling to get one in this country - but as it's for work it needs to be correctly certified and tested as intrinsically safe for a class 1 explosive environment....
And it needs to record sound as well as moving pics...

Most have a lead time of 6 weeks - which is too long.....

I have one of those little sd card cameras which cost £20 and would fit inside the body of a certified torch. Dunno what the sound would be like though.
I'll have a look through our list of contractors at work and see what they say.

Eta, try these guys:

Nice one....I had already looked at that camera, the only prob is that I need to be able to provide live commentary over the footage...There are a few camera's around, but only one that I can find with that capability which is the Pixavi EX4000....problem being that there is a 6 week lead time on delivery....need one ASAP....cost isn't really the biggest issue....not often I can say that...

If anyone knows any suppliers I would love to hear....

Have you spoken to these guys?

Is it not possible to issue a hot work permit to allow use of normal gear or at least declare the area gas free?

Nice work though, ta.

In my experience buying expensive and unusual bits of kit over the years if you find a distributor of the one you want a 6 week delay can often be covered with a bit of loan equipment if you can get a PO signed and in their hands.

Might also have good luck with specialist video hire places.
