NON-car: What are these called? LCB test!

Hi all,

Here is a little test for you. I need to find the manufacturer or supplier of these adjustable strut things. Its like a locking gas strut but with out the compressed gas part.

You pull the cable and the shaft is free to slide inside the barrel
You release the cable it it locks tight preventing any movement.

I have seen a few of these and non of them have markings or stickers on them for tracing.

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance,

First correct person gets a smilie!!

Wayne

No idea what it's called, but looks as if it's some kind of complicated brake, although with just one fixing can't imagine it would be that secure. IMHO Ray

No idea but when you pull the cable does that shaft fall free or is there any friction?

Its NON car related so no kind of braking system, dont worry about its use. FYI the photo is taken from an adjustable wheelchair, I am in the rehabilitation industry.

If cable is pulled the bar (strut) through the middle would just fully release or fall.

I Think it grips the strut with a string inside the locking mech. THe spring is coiled around the strut creating huge surface area and grip. THe cable un twists the spring slightly and allows the strut to move freely.

Any other takers?

Why not contact the wheelchair manufacturer? Or ring around wheelchair suppliers to ask them?

I am already doing this but the technical people in the know (and the best contacts in the company that I have including the national support teams) will not know who their suppliers are because they are BIG interenational companies. Its like asking a Ford dealer who makes their seat runners!!

Also its the sort of thing that people ask me to find out.

Has this really stumped the LCB world?

Does anybody even recognise these things? Are they used in other industries? I can imagine they have hundreds of applications.

Is the prespective of the shot confusing? I suppose the photo is quite big, just stand back!!!

The wheel in the back ground is nothing to do with the black frame in the foreground of the shot. Its the silver shaft with cable activated lock object I am talking about.

Come on, come on, roll up.
